  1. Martin Luther King Jr once said, “Before We Leave The Breakfast Table We Will Have Depended On Half The World “ What does this mean?

  2. L6 – Fairtrade L.O. To be able to describe the work of Fairtrade and start to relate content studied to different campaign options http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drvPrMtXcaE

  3. Who gets paid for a cup of coffee? Match the following groups with the percentage they get from the price of a cup of coffee: Growers 55% Exporters 10% Shippers 25% Retailers 10%

  4. Fairtrade helps workers and farmers get a fair price for the things that they make and grow.

  5. The FAIRTRADE Mark means: • Farmers receive a fair price for their products • Producers receive money to invest in improving their communities and businesses • Greater respect for the environment • Small farmers have a stronger position in world markets (they are able to sell their products) • A closer link between shoppers and producers (you know where your food is coming from)

  6. Let’s see how much you can remember… • How many children does Justino have? • What keyword describes the group of workers Justino got together to fight for their rights? • Which brand of chocolate was the first in the UK to gain the Fairtrade mark? • TIF: Which other Fairtrade products can you buy?

  7. Kuapa Kokoo • In Ghana there are about one and a half million cocoa farmers. In the last 30 years the price they are paid for their cocoa beans has dropped right down, so they hardly make any money to live on. Sometimes they have to borrow money, but it’s difficult to pay back their debts. To make things worse, there have been bush fires, and months with no rain. • About ten years ago a group of cocoa farmers joined together to form a group called Kuapa Kokoo. This means ‘The Good Cocoa Farmers Company’. They sell some of their cocoa through Fairtrade. This means they get more money for each sack of beans. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orDjyNBmkj4

  8. Analysis What are the advantages & disadvantages of switching to Fairtrade for these people?

  9. Evaluation Whose responsibility is it to ensure that the cocoa farmers get paid a sufficient wage? Cocoa Farmers Multi-national companies Governments Consumers

  10. Thinking about your controlled assessment… • Think about the topics we’ve covered so far… • A campaign to convince the government to donate more money to help the homeless? • A campaign to convince the government to donate more money to a different cause? • A campaign to stop a particular brand using sweatshop workers? • A campaign to get more Fairtrade products in the school restaurant? • A campaign to get a particular supermarket to stock more Fairtrade products?

  11. Homework: Think of a campaign that you could run that links with the topics we’ve studied so far. Answer the following questions in full sentences: • What is the issue? • Who does the issue affect? • Who has the power to change this? (power players) • Who could support your campaign? • Who may disagree/challenge your campaign? • What campaign methods would be appropriate to use? • What campaign methods would be inappropriate to use? • How likely are you to succeed in this campaign?
