  2. Facts • The Imperial army served Japan. • It was active from 1871-1945. • It had 6,095,000 men at one time. • 大日本帝國陸軍, This is how you spell “Imperial Japanese Army” in traditional calligraphy.

  3. How It Started • In 1871 the Japanese Imperial Army was started. After the overthrow of Tokugawa Shogunate Japan needed a military to protect it. This is how The Japanese Imperial Army started. Training for the Imperial Army

  4. First Deployment • In 1874 after the murder of 45 crew members on a shipwrecked vessel the Imperial Japanese Army was sent to investigate. This ship was wrecked on the southern tip of Taiwan. The man were murdered by Paiwan Aborigines.

  5. Satsuma Rebellion • In the late 1870’s the overthrow of the emperor caused a lot of conflict. Samurai warriors led the rebellion against the Imperial Army of Japan. This Rebellion caused a civil war. The war ending though because the Imperial Army had modernized tactics and weapons.

  6. First Sino Japanese War • This war was fought between The Qing Dynasty and Japanese Meiji Government. It was over control of Korea. The Meiji government won again because their western tactics and modern weapons.

  7. WWI • Japan was not highly involved in this war other than they helped defeat the Germans in the battle of Tsingtao. Imperial Japanese Army uniform known as the Kiaochow.

  8. WWII • The Imperial Army had 51 divisions and 1,700,000 men in 1941. In 1945 They had a total of 5.5 million men stationed in the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, and many other Asian Countries. Around 1943 Japan had a shortage of supplies which caused many casualties due to starvation and many aircraft and artillery were not useable because the lack of spare parts.

  9. War Crimes • Japan was very well known for it’s Brutality against prisoners of war. This includes the Nanking Massacre where over 200,000 disarmed soldiers and citizens were murdered and an estimated, 20,000-80,000 women were raped by soldiers of the Imperial Army.
