Te Herenga Waka O Te Ora Whanau – (THW) • 1998 - Many hui involving Maori. • Hauora Waikato – facilitated process. • Trustees (original) mandated by Iwi – Gilbert Taurua (Kai Tahu), Dr Lorna Dyall (NgatiWhatua), Maureen Waaka (Te Arawa), Dr Wiremu Manaia (Ngati Awa), Terry Ehau (NgatiPorou), Monica Stockdale (Kahungungu), Denis McLeod (Taranaki).

  2. THW – Activities: • Legally constituted – July 2003. • Hui at Pakirikiri Marae, Ngati Porou – 2003. • PGC – contracts THW to complete Justice Project – Report submitted (He Huarahi Whiringa) – 2004. • Ministry of Health – assume responsibility for Problem Gambling – 2004.

THW - Activities • Developed Strategic Plan: • Vision: To reduce Maori gambling related harm. • Goals: • Promote Maori Gambling Health advocacy. • Develop Maori Purchasing Strategy. • Influence Maori Health policy. • Support Maori Provider workforce developments. • Develop Maori Research programme. • Ensure internal compliance & Charter obligations.

  4. THW – Recent Activities: • Tautoko: • Health Providers hui at Ahuriri. • Whakatau Mai Ra – Research (Te Runanga o Kirikiriroa.) • Individual requests (eg Doctor Laurie Morrison PhD research; Ruth Herd Waitangi Tribunal Claim – Problem Gambling) • Facilitation of Hui (Outcomes Framework) • Submissions – Gambling Levy, Tiriiti o Waitangi exclusion, Gambling Commission….. • Hui with Maori Party, Te Puni Kokiri, Maori Select Committee…. • Occasional participation in some MoH lead advisory / discussion forums. • Previously linked with HSC on joint initiatives. • Occasional newsletters, and Trustee hui (3 per year).

  5. THW – “Wish List” • Recognition by Govt agencies (MoH – DIA). • Engagement - to advance of Maori provider developmental needs. • Advocating Maori Research programme. • Establish protocol to seek accountability from non Maori providers of their services to Maori. • Recognition of the ‘expert’ knowledge Maori possess in determining the needs of Maori.
