  2. About Us The American Board was founded in 2001 via a grant from the federal Department of Education. The American Board is a non-partisan, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We operate in 11 states and offer certification in 10 subject areas. We are headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia with a satellite office in Burtonsville, Maryland. We work directly with state legislators and education departments to ensure our students will be qualified to teach after they receive their certification. 23% of American Board students are minorities. 32% of our students are pursuing certification in math and science. The average retention rate of our teachers is 85% over the first three years of teaching. The national retention rate is 67%. In a recent survey, 95% of public school principals surveyed rated our teachers to be as effective as or more effective than their peers.

  3. Program Options The American Board offers teacher certification in 10 different subjects in 13 states. The subjects include Biology, History, Chemistry, Math, Science, English, Physics, Special Edu., Elementary and Reading In 4 of our offered subjects (Biology, English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Special Education), we offer two variations of the program, Standard and Premium. The Standard program provides students with the information they need to learn and pass the subject area exam and the Professional Teaching Knowledge (PTK) exam. The Premium program provides students with everything included with the Standard program, along with additional study materials and practice tests, a job counselling webinar and workbook to assist our students with job hunting. Standard and Premium students take the same exams and receive the same certification upon passing.

  4. How To Enroll Hold a Bachelor’s degree or be within 6 months of receiving your Bachelor’s degree. Your degree does not need to be in the subject you wish to teach. Once enrolled you will need to send the American Board your college or university transcripts. Authorize the American Board to run a standard background check. This background check will be similar to the background check your state or county’s department of education will conduct on you before you can be employed in a school. Select the subject area you would like to teach or select the State you would like to teach in. Read through the requirements of the subject area you would like to teach as well as the requirements for your State.

  5. Each State has different requirements for becoming a teacher. Some states require that you register with the state’s department of education before you begin our program while other states require additional certifications and mentorships in order to receive your professional teaching license. At the bottom of each subject page is a link to enroll with that specific program. Click that link to enroll and complete your one- time payment. You will then be able to begin our program.
