  2. Tonicity (root: tonic) • Used to describe the environment around the cell. • Environment can be: • HYPERtonic = more solute • HYPOtonic = less • ISOtonic = same

  3. Cell

  4. Cell’s environment Cell Solute = dissolved materials

  5. Water Follows Solute

  6. = Hypotonic Environment Cell swells. If the gradient is great enough, the cell will burst. Cell lysis = cell bursting

  7. = Hypertonic environment Crenation = cell shrinking

  8. Solute is equal inside and outside the cell.
