  2. Stress= mental or physical tension or pressure • Three kinds of Stress • 1. dull/minor = homework, headaches, etc • 2. aching and ongoing= troubled relationship, backache, etc. • 3. sudden and traumatic= death, accidents, etc.

  3. How do you deal with the stress you experience?

  4. Look at page 34-35 in workbook • COPE • Considering alternatives-Deal with feelings • Others’ support-help each other • Problems solving-plan • Esteem building- accept yourself

  5. Turn to page 39 in workbook • Share your answers with class

  6. Is drug use an effective way to deal with stress? Why or why not? • Drug use is not an effective way to deal with stress because it does not address the root of the problems. It hides or covers up what is causing the stress.

  7. How does drug abuse affect our ability to deal with stress • The stress piles up and eventually must be dealt with. After using drugs for a while, the stress may have become severe, and no longer easily manageable

  8. Could drug use be stressful? How? • You keep escaping the problem instead of dealing with it

  9. How does drug abuse affect ones ability to love one’s dreams and achieve one’s goals? • Drug abuse affects one’s health and relationships. One cannot interact effectively to achieve one’s goals, or live a healthy, happy, and successful life

How does drug use cause… • FINANCIAL STRESS? • (SPENDING TOO MUCH MONEY) • REALTIONSHIP STRESS • ( ARGUMENTS, FIGHTS, ETC. • SCHOOL OR JOB STRESS • (ILLNESS DUE TO USE, GETTING CAUGHT, TRUANCY, TARDINESS) • PUTTING THINGS OFF/PROCRASTINATING • ( STRESS BUILDS UP) • EMOTIONAL STRESS • ( DEPRESSION) • LEGAL PROBLEMS • ( DUI, GETTING BUSTED) • STRESS FROM DIMINISHING HEALTH • ( FEELING TIRED, DRINKING, SMOKING, HEART DISEASE, CANCER)

  11. How does drug use contribute to future illness? • Cancer • Stroke • Lung disease • Heart disease • Emphysema • Liver problems

  12. What do you do to maintain your current health? What might you do to insure good health in the future? • Exercise • Proper diet • Sleep • Etc

  13. Quality of Life • Living as close to fulfilling one’s dream and goals as possible • The ability to do the things we want to do • Mental, physical, emotional fitness • Clear and structured goals • Feeling content and successful

  24. Summary • Coping with stress effectively supports our physical and mental health. The better we feel, the more likely we are to achieve our goals. Drug abuse limits our ability to deal with stress. It hinders our health, and affects the quality of our lives and our ability to achieve our goals.
