  1. Did you know that: There are 2,598,960 five-card hands possible in a 52-card deck of cards? Math 9/27-10/1 Mean, Median, Mode, and Range

  2. Mean, Median, Mode, RangeLesson 8.2 • Create a flap book of definitions. • MEAN: The average. Add all the numbers in a set of data then divide the sum by the number of addends (numbers you added). • MEDIAN: The middle number in an ordered set of data • MODE: The number that occurs MOST in an ordered set of data • RANGE: The difference between the greatest number and least number in a set of data. Did you know that: Forty is the only number that has all its letters in alphabetical order?

  3. Problem Solving…

  4. Don’t be so mean…

  5. What does mean mean? • Collect data about the number of letters in the first name of each student in your group. • Take one block for each letter in your first name. • Make a tower with your blocks. • Place all towers in the middle of your group to create a bar graph. • Create a frequency table based on the data collected. • Order your group’s data points from the smallest to largest. • Find the median of the data. (The number in the middle). • Find the mode of the data. (The number that occurs most). • Find the range of the data. (The difference between the largest and smallest numbers.) • Find the mean of the data. Make all of the towers of your group’s bar the same height. Place any extras to the side.

  6. Will Ms. Mathlete save the day?

  7. Warm up your brains… Math Riddle: Two fathers and two sons sat down to eat eggs for breakfast. They ate exactly three eggs, each person had an egg. How is this possible? What will you do first? What strategies will you use to solve these problems?

  8. Problem Solving… Riddle me this: A farmer is trying to cross a river. He is taking with him a rabbit, carrots and a fox, and he has a small raft. He can only bring 1 item a time across the river because his raft can only fit either the rabbit, the carrots or the fox. How does he cross the river. (You can assume that the fox does not eat the rabbit if the man is present, you can also assume that the fox and the rabbit are not trying to escape and run away)

  9. Answer….

  10. Which of the following has a mode of 8? • A.6,8,8,9,10,9,9 • B. 8,5,5,5,8 • C. 4,5,2,4,8 • D. 8,3,8,2,8 What is this mode of transportation?

  11. Overworked Ophelia has been to the store many times this week… Which one of these numbers is higher than her mean gasoline usage? 6 9 13 11

  12. What is the range of Overworked Ophelia’s gasoline usage? 45 19 34 18 23, 12,9, 11,4

  13. Lisa earned the following grades on her Detective-in-Training Summatives.. 87,45,89, 90,34,88,87, 100 • What is the mean score of Lisa’s grades? EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWER • Do you think she would pass detective school?

  14. Lisa consults Nettie to help her with the math. 87,45,89, 90,34,88,87, 100 What is the MODE of Lisa’s grades? What is the range of Lisa’s grades? What is the median of Lisa’s grades? EXPLAIN ALL OF YOUR ANSWERS.
