  2. The Sperm Journey • Sperm begins its travels in the female’s vagina • Then it moves through the cervix into the uterus • Its last stop is in the fallopian tube

  3. The Ovum Journey • The ovum (egg) has been released from the ovary • It has started to travel down the fallopian tube • It is ready and waiting for the arrival of sperm so it can be fertilized

  4. Sperm Meets Ovum • Only one sperm will be allowed to enter • The sperm which have made it to the egg try to penetrate its membrane (egg wall)

  5. Sperm and Ovum Become One • Sperm contains half of the genetic information to form a new life • The ovum contains the other half of the genetic information • The sperm cell releases its nucleus which combines with the egg's DNA to create a zygote • A zygote is the first cell of a new life

  6. Final Fertilization Step • The zygote then travels down the fallopian tube into the uterus • It attaches to the wall of uterus • It resides there for the development of a baby
