  3. The Issue

  4. The Crisis:Childhood Hunger • More than 16 million, one in five, American children don’t know when their next meal will come. • Almost one-third are under five years old. • Undernourished children suffer from impaired cognitive development and long-term emotional and health problems. The Problem: Access to Food • There is enough food in America to feed all children, yet: • 10 million eligible kids don’t get free or reduced price school breakfast. • 16.3 million children qualify for summer meals but don’t receive them. 4

  5. Teacher Survey Results Too many kids are coming to school too hungry to learn. • 80% • of teachers say they see children who regularly come to school hungry each week because they are not getting enough to eat at home. “Hungry children are distracted children. We want to make sure nothing gets in the way of our children performing well academically, including hunger.” - Arne Duncan 5

  11. Eat Healthy – Help Hungry Kids! • No Kid Hungry, Every Kid Healthy helps students to develop life-long healthy eating habits while raising funds to make sure that children less fortunate can grow up healthy too. • The program is supported by curriculum you can use in your classroom about healthy eating for both younger kids and teens. Check out: www.NoKidHungry2.org/schoolresources.

  12. How It Works • Students earn points each day during the event by completing various Every Kid Healthy activities. • For each activity completed, students track their points and ask friends and family to sponsor them for each point earned. • At the end of the week-long event, students return their donations to school. • No Kid Hungry, Every Kid Healthy provides a way to teach kids about healthy eating habits while providing learning opportunities surrounding nutrition and helping others who may be struggling with hunger.

  13. Pledge to Get Healthy! There are lots of ways to get healthy! For the week of the event, do one or moreof these activities per day! These are 5 point activities:• Eat from all five food groups in one day • Eat a new fruit or vegetable • Replace a sweet or high-fat drink (soda, sports drink, whole milk, etc.) with low-fat milk or water • Choose a snack that has less sugar, salt, or fat than your usual snack

  14. More Every Kid Healthy Activities These are 10 point activities (a grown up can help you): • Make a meal that has at least three different color fruits and vegetables • Make a homemade healthy drink or snack and serve it to friends • Take the $10 Challenge! Prepare a healthy meal with all five food groups for $10 or less

  15. During the Event • Students do Every Kid Healthy activities developing life-long healthy eating habits. • Teachers and parents can support the activities by tying downloadable curriculum and recipes into their classrooms or dinner time. • Students ask friends and family to sponsor their efforts to help kids struggling with hunger. • At the end of the event, students bring their collected donations to school.

  16. Thank You Gifts Students receive thank you gifts when they collect just $15 of donations! • $15.00-$34.99 No Kid Hungry Sunglasses • $35.00-$49.99 “I Helped End Childhood Hunger” T-shirt • $50 or more No Kid Hungry Sunglasses + “I Helped End Childhood Hunger” T-shirt

  17. Why You Should Help! • More than 16 MILLION KIDS in America—that’s 1 IN 5— struggle with hunger. That many kids would fill more than 200,000 school buses. • 46.2 MILLION AMERICANS live in poverty. That’s equal to the entire population of Spain. • 10.5 million kids that receive a free or reduced-price school lunch could be getting a school breakfast…but they’re not. hat’s more than 1.8 BILLION MISSED BREAKFASTS over the course of a year.

  18. What You Can Do To Help! • Encourage your student to participate! Your encouragement will go a long way towards getting lots of students involved! • Let your parents know about the program and encourage them to participate. • Use some of the great downloadable online curriculum in your classroom.
