6. CAP Purpose The Country Areas Program (CAP) is an equity program designed to assist schools and their communities to enhance the learning outcomes and educational opportunities for students in geographically isolated areas. guidelines

8. CAP Action Areas Isolated rural communities are subject to additional factors which amplify the effects of reduced access. Actions that can directly address the effects of geographic isolation are:

9. Providing students with curriculum access and enhancement through access to a wider range of teachers, curriculum materials, learning experiences and sources of knowledge.

10. Facilitating student engagement and peer interaction across small educational cohorts to gain a more direct and timely opportunity to engage in collaborative learning with a wider range of peers.

11. Engaging in connected learning so that geographically isolated students are supported in a wide variety of interactions across space and time, in accessing information sources, educational and community services and individual connections.

Learning Communities… learning communities have been defined as: any group of people, whether linked by geography or some other shared interest, which addresses the learning needs of its members through proactive partnerships. It explicitly uses learning as a way of promoting social cohesion, regeneration and economic development. (Kearns, McDonald, Candy, Knights & Papadopoulos, 1999, pp. 61-62) Brainstorm List Learning Community Activities that schools could be involved in. How do these activities promote quality learning for isolated students. Chose one activity to brainstorm all the ways that you could use for example technology to extend and maintain that face-to-face connection and build on the relationship.
