  2. Leif Eriksson Country of Birth: Iceland Sponsor: No sponsor Motives: Better land for farming. The Scandinavian geography and climate were not good for farming. Dates of Exploration: 1001 Impact: Settlements in Greenland, Iceland and Newfoundland. Artifacts left behind provide evidence that the Vikings existed. Claim to Fame: He was the first European to land in North America in the year 1001. This was 500 years before Christopher Columbus! He landed in what is now Newfoundland, Canada.

  3. Marco Polo Country of Birth: Italy Sponsor: No sponsor. He traveled with his father and uncle. Motives: Trading and bringing new products from China (spices, silks, jewels, ivory) to Europe. Dates of Exploration: 1271-1275 C.E Impact: Inspired people like Christopher Columbus to search for a western sea route to Asia in search of the spices, silks and other goods described in his book, “The Travels of Marco Polo.” Claim to Fame: Made a long and dangerous trip over land and through the desert to China. The route he traveled is known as the “Silk Road.” He worked for the great Kublai Khan.

  5. Christopher Columbus Sponsor: Spain Motives: Looking for a western sea route to Asia to find spices, silks, and other goods for trading. He was also looking for gold and riches. Dates of Exploration: 1492-1506 C.E Impact: Claimed land for Spain, mistreated Native Americans, provided information for new maps. Claim to Fame: Was the first European to claim land in the New World, although he thought that he had reached Asia.

  6. Juan Ponce de Leon Sponsor: Spain Motives: Looking for the magical “Fountain of Youth,” and for gold and riches. Dates of Exploration: 1506-1521 C.E Impact: Claimed lands for Spain, mistreated Native Americans, Provided information for new maps (Florida). Claim to Fame: Never found the “Fountain of Youth” but he did discover Florida and claim the land for Spain.

  7. Hernan Cortes Sponsor: Spain Motives: To conquer the Aztecs and take their gold and silver. Dates of Exploration: 1519-1521 C.E Impact: Killed and mistreated the Aztecs, spread diseases, claimed land for Spain. Claim to Fame: Conquered the Aztec Empire in what is now central Mexico.

Dates of Exploration: 1497-1498 C.E Impact: Claimed land for England, provided information for new maps. Claim to Fame: First person to claim land for England in North America in what is now eastern Canada.

  9. Samuel de Champlain Sponsor: France Motives: To establish a settlement in the New World. Dates of Exploration: 1603-1629 C.E Impact: Claimed lands for France, Established a settlement, Provided information for new maps (Lake Champlain). Claim to Fame: Called the “Father of New France”because he established a settlement in what is now Canada. Founded the city of Quebec. Discovered Lake Champlain, which was named after him.

  10. Francisco Pizarro Sponsor: Spain Motives: The gold and riches of the Inca Empire. Dates of Exploration: 1510-1531 C.E Impact: Claimed land for Spain, Killed and mistreated the Incas, Spread diseases to the Incas, and established a settlement. Claim to Fame: Conquered the Inca Empire.

  11. Vasco Nunez de Balboa Sponsor: Spain Motives: The gold and riches of the Inca Empire. Dates of Exploration: 1500-1517 C.E Impact: Claimed the South Sea (Pacific Ocean) for Spain and provided information for new maps (South Sea). Claim to Fame: First European to see the Pacific Ocean, which he named the “South Sea,” and claimed for Spain. He never found the Incas.

  12. Jacques Cartier Sponsor: France Motives: Looking for a western sea route to Asia through the Northwest Passage. Dates of Exploration: 1534-1542 C.E Impact: Claimed lands for France, provided information for new maps (St. Lawrence River), and established a settlement Claim to Fame: Made France’s first land claim in North America in what is now Canada. Also discovered, and named, the St. Lawrence River.

  13. Ferdinand Magellan Sponsor: Spain Motives: Searching for a western sea route to Asia, Looking for gold and riches. Dates of Exploration: 1519-1521 C.E Impact: Proved that the world was round and that it is much larger than people thought. Provided information for new maps (Pacific Ocean). Claim to Fame: Led the 1st trip to sail around the world (circumnavigate). Magellan didn’t live to finish the trip, but his crew did. He changed the name of the South Sea (named by Balboa) to the Pacific Ocean.

  14. Henry Hudson Sponsor: Holland (1st voyage), England (2nd voyage). Motives: Looking for a sea route to Asia through the Northwest Passage. Dates of Exploration: 1609-1610 C.E Impact: Claimed land for England in eastern Canada. Provided information for new maps (Hudson Bay & Hudson River). Claim to Fame: Found and named the Hudson River and Hudson Bay.

  15. Amerigo Vespucci Sponsor: Spain and Portugal Motives: To find a quicker way to sail to Asia by going west. Dates of Exploration: 1497-1504 C.E Impact: Provided information for new maps. He described the “New World.” Claim to Fame: A German mapmaker put the name “America” on the land in the “New World” that Vespucci described in letters. The name stuck and the Americas were named after him.
