This study explores the transition from "old" ethnicity data fields to the "new" multiethnicity data element in higher education settings. By examining student ethnicity trends and comparing old and new data elements, the research sheds light on the challenges and opportunities for achieving Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) status. The findings demonstrate the importance of accurate data collection in promoting diversity and inclusivity on college campuses.

Transition to the “New” Multiethnicity Data Element Rosaleen Ryan, Ph.D. Monterey Peninsula College The RP Group annual conference April 15, 2011
Background • We examined the ethnicity of students using the “old” ethnicity data field (Spring 2009) • And re-examined those same students using the new multiethnicity data element (Fall 2009)
Background • We did not re-survey our entire continuing student population • Only a small percentage of continuing students update information on “Continuing Student Update Form” • We are particularly interested in number/percentage of Latino students as we are trying to achieve HSI status
The Current Scenario • Our college IT department cleaned up SB29 just in time for IPEDS Fall Enrollment survey (based on Fall 2010 data) • Latino students are now 24.8% of our student population • Unknown is < 0.1%
