Summary • Comparison between CMAQ and CMAQ-UCD at urban sites shows that gas and particle phases were close to equilibrium during CRPAQS. • CMAQ model is competent for SIP simulations but phase-equilibrium may not hold in future less-polluted scenarios. • Comparing sectional and modal approaches at rural sites poses challenges. • CMAQ-UCD predicted less NO3 and NH4 on Dec 25, Jan 2 and Jan 3. N2O5?
