The majority of the scenes with each character are filmed with closeups (whereas the garbage workers are seen in a more mid angle shot), this immediately establishes a relationship between the two and creates a narrative link. Cross cutting between scenes (shows it’s happening at the same time) ⤷ makes the audience nervous for the victim, whether he’ll get caught ⤷ the cross-cutting speeds up which suggests the man is running out of time to escape
Having a wider angle when the garbage truck arrives suggests freedom as it removes the claustrophobic constraints of the close ups. The transitions from shot to shot are dissolves ⤷ this slows down the pace of the scene ⤷creates tension ⤷the ’slow-burn’ effect makes the audience uncomfortable The overall lack of dialogue is representative of the absence of humanity within this post-apocalyptic world. Communication demonstrates relationships and there seems to be a lack of them in the narrative.
The extreme closeup is unsettling for the audience, it creates a sense of claustrophobia and makes the audience seem as though they are in the bin as well. Use of fisheye lens ⤷creates a sense of warped vision ⤷replicates the effect of eyes widening (when scared POV shot and a low angle ⤷physically places the butcher in a position of power and the victim in one of vulnerability ⤷the audience is looking through the victim’s eyes, makes the image more realistic and terror inducing
