  1. Post apocalyptic setting Orange lighting with smoke is prominent ⤷Sense of dystopia ⤷Creates the feeling of being hot and suffocated

  2. ⤷add to the smokey and suffocating atmosphere, making the audience uncomfortable ⤷butcher is meant to be professional and hygienic, dirty clothes suggest he is not concerned with his job and has ulterior motives Butcher is introduced with dirty clothes Constant sharpening of knife ⤷menacing action ⤷diegetic noise is constant, building tension creating a sense of no escape ⤷constant reminder of the butcher’s threat ⤷loud sound effects contrast how quiet the victim is trying to be, makes the audience nervous Main colour scheme is neutral ⤷absence of colour= loss of life

  3. Sequence of under ground shots ⤷suggests a theme of hiding and being out of sight ⤷sewage pipes also add to the idea of filth and lack of cleanliness Sounds of knife sharpening sound far away and begin to echo through the pipes ⤷suggests that the man is hidden away from the butcher ⤷unsettling for the audience to hear the constant noise Introduction of Victim ⤷close-up keeps tension high and creates a sense of being trapped/enclosed ⤷man is visibly nervous (sweating), this adds depth to the narrative, audience is left wondering what is happening Low-key lighting as opposed to the standard three-point lighting used in film ⤷creates a sinister atmosphere

  4. The majority of the scenes with each character are filmed with closeups (whereas the garbage workers are seen in a more mid angle shot), this immediately establishes a relationship between the two and creates a narrative link. Cross cutting between scenes (shows it’s happening at the same time) ⤷ makes the audience nervous for the victim, whether he’ll get caught ⤷ the cross-cutting speeds up which suggests the man is running out of time to escape

  5. Having a wider angle when the garbage truck arrives suggests freedom as it removes the claustrophobic constraints of the close ups. The transitions from shot to shot are dissolves ⤷ this slows down the pace of the scene ⤷creates tension ⤷the ’slow-burn’ effect makes the audience uncomfortable The overall lack of dialogue is representative of the absence of humanity within this post-apocalyptic world. Communication demonstrates relationships and there seems to be a lack of them in the narrative.

  6. The extreme closeup is unsettling for the audience, it creates a sense of claustrophobia and makes the audience seem as though they are in the bin as well. Use of fisheye lens ⤷creates a sense of warped vision ⤷replicates the effect of eyes widening (when scared POV shot and a low angle ⤷physically places the butcher in a position of power and the victim in one of vulnerability ⤷the audience is looking through the victim’s eyes, makes the image more realistic and terror inducing
