  5. Career Clusters?? • What are career clusters? • Do you know how many there are? • Which one captures your interest the most? Groupings of occupations/career specialties used as an organizing tool for curriculum design and instruction. Clusters Online

  6. Career Pathways Sub-groupings of occupations/career specialties used as an organizing tool for curriculum design and instruction. Occupations/career specialties are grouped into Pathways based on the fact that they require a set of common knowledge and skills for career success. Architecture & Construction Design/Pre-Construction Construction Maintenance/Operations

  8. Group Brainstorm of Careers Group of three or four Establish speaker and secretary… 2002 Federal Decisions Write down as many careers as you can think of. (minimum 30) What career clusters might they be in? How did you categorize your list? Competition… who will win? Brief group presentation of your “method”

  10. Present Posters from yesterday • Practice public speaking skills by presenting group posters (careers / jobs and how you chose to categorize them) • Each member of your committee will share at least one occupation they find interesting. • Hang on Wall like 1st period did yesterday

Career Interest Survey • Each student gets own copy. • Explain that each section relates to a career cluster (last page shows the key to this) • Please emphasize that they do NOT write on the packet but record answers in their journal notebook (found in back of room) • If there is time remaining, discuss as a class the outcomes… do you think it is an adequate judgment? • Please give students up to 10 points for completing survey and using time wisely. I would suggest doing this as students are completing the survey. Let them know this will be done  Record on attendance sheet.

  16. Something to think about… • If you work 40 hours a week, you will have spent 2,080 hours on the job in one year. At that rate, if you retire after 40 years of working, you will have spent 83,200 hours of your life on the job. Use that time well by selecting a career path that you will enjoy.

  18. Steps to Career Plan • List your personal and career interests, natural abilities, job skills, academic achievements, and values. • Establish short- and long-terms goals. It is important to establish dates for reaching your goals and to identify a method for evaluating your progress. • Locate and use occupational information. • Identify broad career areas that are related to your interests, talents, and important values. • Choose as many occupations as possible within your broad areas of career interest. Make certain that your selection are expected to offer future growth and stability and will provide experiences leading to higher-paying, more desirable occupations. • Narrow down your occupational choices to a few • Develop a plan to acquire the education and training you will need to enter the occupations you have selected. • Learn job-seeking and job-keeping skills • Decide what sacrifices you are willing to make to fulfill your career plan.
