  2. What is Effective Learning ? • How much do you remember what you have learned for your latest examination ? SHORT TERM MEMORY

  3. What is Effective Learning ? • Knowledge stored in your LONG TERM MEMORY • Knowledge which can enable you to apply the knowledge • To solve problems in different situations • To dissect ideas into constituent parts (analyse) • Etc…………….

  4. Factors affecting Learning Effectiveness • Prior knowledge • Skill • Timely feedback / expert guidance • Self –initiative • Motivation / attitude

  5. Motivation for Learning • To pass a test / examination • To complete an assignment Extrinsic motives • To add value to one-self • For the sake of interest Intrinsic motives

How to set the right motivation ? • Learners have to know where they are going and have a sense of progress towards their objectives • Where are you going ? • Why do you want to get there? • Are you making progress • How do you know when you are there? The first two questions are about setting goal, the last two about assessing outcomes.

  7. Effective Learning • Bloom’s Taxonomy on Learning Outcomes: • Knowledge • Comprehension • Application • Analysis • Synthesis • Evaluation

  8. Learning Outcomes • Knowledge • The ability to memorise and recall facts • What is ? When did……happen? • Comprehension • demonstrating understanding of facts and ideas • Compare and contrast…… In your own word, explain……..

  9. Learning Outcomes • Application • solving problems by applying acquired knowledge • How would you apply………to develop…… ? • Analysis • Able to break up ideas into smaller components and use them accordingly • How is ………. related to……………. ?

Effective Learner ??? • Understand and use the latest information • To see the big picture • To spot emerging trend • To set high moral and professional standards • To communicate effectively • To bring the best out of people • To take risks • To learn from mistakes • To make difficult decisions

  12. Try to improve your learning attitude and method from now on. Spend about six hours per week on a course.
