  1. Community Based Initiatives GES DISC UWG 2011 Meeting

  2. An Acronym Field Guide to Communities • Earth Science Data Systems Working Group (ESDSWG) • 4 Working Groups: Metrics, Reuse, TechnologyInfusion, Standards and Processes • Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) • Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) • Committee on Earth Observing Satellites (CEOS) • Working Group on Information Systems and Services (WGISS) • Atmospheric Composition Constellation (ACC)

  3. ESIP Discovery Cluster • Began in 2008 at ESDSWG Meeting • “Why So Difficult?” rant • Federated solution proposed to community • Federated Recursive OpenSearch Toolset (FROST) • Federated Search cluster founded in 2009 • Federated Search combined with data- and service-casting to form Discovery Cluster in 2010 • Push harder in this area? • Extensions to ESIP Convention? • Reference implementations?

  4. ESIP Information Quality Cluster • Objectives • Bring together various disciplines to assess aspects of quality of remote sensing and model data • Share best practices • Develop a framework for consistent capture, harmonization and presentation of data quality • Current Activity • Prepare for ESIP Summer Meeting with theme “Data and Information Quality” • Long-term • White paper describing needs, standards and recom-mendationsfor handling remote sensing data quality

  5. ESDSWG Technology Infusion Working Group • Mandated as part of ACCESS Project wins • Standards and Processes Group • E.g., Capability Vision, Decadal Survey Use Cases • Services, Interoperability, and Orchestration • Spinoff of Federated Search • Semantic Web • Semantic Web tutorial at ESIP • Technology infusion into GES DISC • Data Stewardship • Kind of lurking so far

  6. WGISS Architectural Development Committee • Ad hoc participant • Co-authored white paper on “Challenges to Seamless Data Discovery and Access to Remote Sensing Data” • Also an IGARSS Paper this year • What next??? (How to solve???) • Consulting on CEOS WGISS Integrated Catalog (CWIC) • Federated search based on OGC standards • Push to solve Challenges to Seamless Data Discovery?

  7. WGISS / Atmospheric Composition Portal • Originally formed out of CEOS Atmospheric Composition Constellation • Now under WGISS • Joint project between NASA and DLR (German space agency) • Brings DLR, DataFed and GES DISC data together • Level 3 gridded data only • Interesting technology testbed • WCS as data exchange • Common Style Layer Descriptors for data comparisons • BUT: needs more science direction

  8. GEWEX / CEOP • Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle Observations Project • Spearheaded by T. Koike • Developing AIRS subsets for ingest into CEOP Satellite Data Gateway • L1 and L2 for Reference sites (250 x 250 km) • L2 Monsoonal subsets • Reproject/grid and reformat to CEOP format • Mostly best-effort basis

  9. GEWEX Aerosol Assessment Panel (GAAP) • NASA Radiation Science Program, requested by GEWEX Radiation Panel • Evaluate State-of-the-Science of the efficacy of commonly used satellite aerosol products. • Assess literature on satellite remote sensing of aerosols and application to the science community. • Identify gaps and key stumbling blocks in the use of such data. • Based on 1) and 2), conduct key experiments and studies to clarify product efficacy. • Make recommendations on programmatic and developers level to improve product quality and applicability.

  10. GAAP Reports • In the first report, provide a broad overview of available and a thorough literature review of past work. • Identify key milestones and areas of concern and provide recommendations for the scientific community and further investigation. • In subsequent reports, provide independent evaluation of baseline and aggregated products. • GES DISC: Gregory Leptoukh, active in multi-sensor aerosol data intercomparison.

  11. Community-Based Giovanni • Designed to allow people external to the GES DISC to support their own datasets and portals • e.g., CERES, TES, MODIS... • Conditions for community providers • Standard file format and/or protocol • HDF-EOS*, netCDF/CF • OPeNDAP (preferred), anonymous FTP • ESIP OpenSearch support (ECHO or own server) • Level 3 regular grids only • NAMS/IdMAX identity • Prototype • Data wizard • Portal Constructor (in progress)

  12. Other Community Initiatives • Simple Subset Wizard: 10 EOS Data Centers(!) • Giovanni for external data • e.g., ASDC for CERES, TES, MODAPS for MODIS atmospheres products • Data Quality Screening Service: partner with MODIS • Collaborative Energy and Water Cycle Information Services (CEWIS): workshop • Geodata 2011: data lifecycle, integration and citation • CUAHSI*: working on time series capability *Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc.

  13. Discussion • Not enough or too much involvement in technology-oriented communities? • Not enough involvement in science communities? • Typically need an invitation...
