METHOD:A qualitative design, based on the content analysis approach, was employed for data collection and analysis of the experiences of Iranian women on infertility. Qualitative studies are intended to enhance understanding and describe the world of human experience .Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 10 women who were seeking infertility treatment at an infertility treatment center for primary infertility (in each case a female factor had been recognized) in Tehran, Iran. All women were interviewed in a private room without the presence of their male partners, whom they all reported to be their husbands. Each interview took 45 to 90 minutes on average. The foci of the interviews’ questions were: 1- Would you please describe your experiences on infertility? 2- What are the impacts of infertility on your life? The interviews were conducted in Persian language by the first author and then translated into English. The second author as a bilingual translator supervised the translation and confirmed it. Each interview was recorded and transcribed verbatim and then analyzed concurrently RESULTS General characteristics of the participants The participant’s age range was between 25 and 45 years (mean= 34 years, SD = 5.90). The duration of infertility range was between 4 and 16 years (mean = 9 years, SD = 6.62). Two participants had an academic degree, two had secondary education, and six had incomplete secondary education. Regarding the participants’ husbands, their age range was between 30 and 55 years (mean=41 years, SD = 6.50). The educational status of the participant's husbands was similar to the educational status of the participants. Themes The analysis of the transcripts resulted in emerging four main themes including “abuse”, “marital instability”, “social isolation”, and “losing of self- esteem”. • CONCLUSION • Infertility seriously influences both the psychological and social wellbeing of women. Improving the awareness of health care providers about the complications of infertility and the context in which they occur are necessary in order to provide infertile women with high quality care.
