  3. Jewish Elders – Villains • Matthew 16:21(NASB)21From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.

  4. Elders of the Church - Pillars • Acts 11:29-30(NASB)29And in the proportion that any of the disciples had means, each of them determined to send a contribution for the relief of the brethren living in Judea. 30And this they did, sending it in charge of Barnabas and Saul to the elders. • Acts 14:23(NASB)23When they had appointed elders for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

  5. Elders – not subject to sharp rebuke • 1 Timothy 5:1-2 (NASB) 1Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, to the younger men as brothers, 2the older women as mothers, and the younger women as sisters, in all purity.

  6. Elders – may be supported • 1 Timothy 5:17-18 (NASB) 17The elders who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. 18For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing,” and “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”

  7. Elders – protection from accusers • 1 Timothy 5:19-20 (NASB) 19Do not receive an accusation against an elder except on the basis of two or three witnesses. 20Those who continue in sin, rebuke in the presence of all, so that the rest also will be fearful of sinning.

  8. Elders - cautioned • 1 Timothy 5:21-22 (NASB) 21I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality. 22Do not lay hands upon anyone too hastily and thereby share responsibility for the sins of others; keep yourself free from sin.

  9. Old Testament Examples • 2 Timothy 3:8-9 (NASB) 8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith. 9But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all, just as Jannes’ and Jambres’ folly was also.

  10. Elders – having them neccessary • Titus 1:5 (NASB) 5For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you,

  11. Elders – why needed • Titus 1:9-13 (NASB) 9holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. 10For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain. 12One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13This testimony is true. For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith,

  12. Elders – mission of comfort • James 5:14-15(NASB)14Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15and the prayer offered in faith will £restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him

  13. Elders - Exhorted • 1 Peter 5:1-4(NASB)1Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, 2shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; 3nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. 4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory..

  14. Respect Authority - in the Church James 5:14-15(NASB)14Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15and the prayer offered in faith will £restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him
