Exciting Opportunities in Neurosciences Research at Ochsner

The neuroscience department at Ochsner offers a multitude of research projects in various specialties, with opportunities for researchers of all levels of experience. From neurosurgery and neurology to vascular neurology and neuro-critical care, there is something for everyone. Ongoing studies cover a wide range of topics, including spine surgery, DBS for Parkinson's disease, and gene expression in cerebrovascular events. Contact Edna Gouveia, Joshua Hanna, or Lanie Sansing to get involved in cutting-edge research today.

  1. Research Opportunities in the Neurosciences EDNA GOUVEIA MD, JOSHUA HANNA MD, LANIE SANSING MS

  2. Introduction to Research  The neuroscience department at Ochsner has one of the highest flow volumes of research within the hospital system.  Each year we complete and publish dozens of study series, case reports, book chapters, conference abstracts & presentations.  8 fulltime neurosurgeons, 5 vascular neurologists, 6 neuro-ICU attendings, 5 neuro-radiologists, 8 Neurologists & epileptologists on staff.  We are always looking for help on a large variety of projects.  We have something for everyone regardless of: -Prior research history -Time commitment -Interests in medicine/surgery

  3. Examples of Research Studies by Field:  Medicine: Fall protocol, Neuro-ICU studies  Neurology: DBS for PD  Neuro-oncology: Gama knife studies, chemosensitivity & molecular genetics, case reports  OB/GYN: MMC, case reports  Orthopedics/PMNR: Spine surgery studies  Peds: MMC, high volume of case reports  Radiology: Neuroradiology studies  Vascular: Angiosuite studies (pathology & outcome studies)

  4. List of Major Ongoing Investigator- Initiated Studies Neurosurgery Studies:  Allograft vs Autograft: -Evaluating fusion outcomes by graft type in spine fusion surgeries  Chemosensitivity & Tumor genetics -Correlating oncogenes with tumor responsivity to chemotherapy  DBS Studies: -Outcomes of DBS in PD in underserved populations -Efficacy of DBS based on treatment parameters  MMC Repair study: -Case series evaluating treatment outcomes  Radiotherapy for brain tumors vs. MIS -Evaluating outcomes between 2 treatment arms  Spine surgery projects: -Comparative studies evaluating efficacies between spine surgery approaches and techniques

  5. List of Major Ongoing Investigator- Initiated Studies cont’d Vascular Neurology/Neurosurgery:  EMS transport time for tPA admin -Flight vs. Air  Ischemic Stroke comparison of vascular intervention: -AC vs. MT outcomes in fluoroscopy time & radiation exposure General Neuro:  Fall risk stratification -Retrospective chart review of fall incidents to create risk stratification scale.

  6. List of Major Ongoing Investigator- Initiated Studies cont’d Neuro-Critical Care:  Micro-RNA expression with ICH and status epilepticus -Determine miRNA expression correlated with inflammation in ICH  Predicting hemorrhagic conversion in Ischemic Stroke w/ CT -Defining relationship between CT findings & ICH following tPA  Gene expression in CVA -Defining novel protein targets for treatment in hemorrhagic stroke  Admission WBC as outcome predictor in ICH -Determining significance of WBC as a predictive variable

  7. List of Major Ongoing Industry- Initiated Studies  DEKK-TEC DM-CHOC-PEN Phase II Trial -Evaluating the safety of DM-CHOC-PEN in treatment of GBM  Early detection & treatment of brain metastases -Evaluating prevalence of metastatic primary dissemination to the CNS & treatment efficacy of early radiosurgery in newly diagnosed patients with CNS mets.  Isoray Trial -Comparing MIKC + SBT vs SRS  METIS Trial -Comparing tumor treatment fields (TTFields) with radiosurgery in patients with inoperable brain tumors.

  8. Take-Home Message:  We are a high-volume publication service that needs researchers for virtually every role in research!  We have research focused on a number of specialties not exclusive to neuroscience!  We have something for all levels of experience despite time commitment or prior research history!  We only require enthusiasm & the willingness to work hard!  Existing research roles: -Data mining -Data interpretation -Manuscript writing -Case report writing -Grant writing -Editing

  9. Contact Information: Feel free to contact us anytime via e-mail or text!  Edna Gouveia MD -(504) 930-2279 -v-egouveia@Ochsner.org  Josh Hanna MD -(660) 441-5320 -jhanna588@gmail.com  Lanie Sansing -Lanie.sansing@Ochsner.org
