  1. IMI Project ProposalCreative Tools for the Creative Industries Simon Colton (IC) Geraint Wiggins (City) Paul Cairns (UCL) Jeremy Gow (UCL)

  2. VisionComputational Creativity • We’re approaching a Creative Bottleneck • Computers will have to take on some creative responsibility in certain areas • Animation is a good example • Particular promise for industrial graphic design • Deadlines have to be met, designs produced • Solutions have to smell of creativity • Tools for graphic design are very sophisticated

  3. Project Summary • Two halves • Build prototypes • Which produce alternative graphic design solutions creatively • Apply the knowledge learned • To industrial-strength packages such as Photoshop • Designing prototypes has various elements: • Graphic design element • Human-computer interaction element • Machine learning element • Computational creativity element

  4. Impact • Staff are hired at design firms • For their craft abilities • But also for their creative abilities • Software is bought for design firms • For it’s craft abilities • But never for its creative abilities • Impact will be a radical re-thinking of the use of computers in the creative industries • Impact will be an improvement in the creativity and productivity of graphic design firms

  5. Workpackages • WP1: Finish graphic design tool • WP2: Rules of good design practice • WP3: Multi-layered information gathering • WP4: Learning rules of document construction • WP5: Learning rules of document assessment • WP6: Searching document construction spaces • WP7: Application to industrial tools

  6. Deliverables • A prototype similar to ThreeCreate • A portfolio of example design solutions • Scientific papers on various topics • A document on the use of computers for creative tasks in the creative industries • A document on the use of computers for creative tasks in graphic design

  7. Partners • Simon Colton, Imperial College • Machine learning aspects • Geraint Wiggins, City University • Computational creativity • Paul Cairns & Jeremy Gow, University College • Human-computer interaction aspects • Bob Cotton, London College of Communication • Graphics design/multi-media aspects • Looking for a partner from industry…. • Made some phone calls!
