20. A Transformed Community Romans 12:1-8 p. 1047
A Transformed Community • An amazing salvation (Rom 1-11) • The way of the Kingdom: Example of Renters • Practical implications of living in mercy & grace
1. Bodies as a Sacrifice • Literal Translation: “I appeal then, brothers [and sisters], because of the mercy of God to offer your bodies as a sacrifice, living, holy and pleasing to God, [it is] your logical/ sensible service/worship.” • Adjectives: “living”, “holy”, “pleasing” – all equal. • Important words and concepts: • “Offer” (Rom 6:13, 19) • All of ourselves without reservation
1. Bodies as a Sacrifice . . . • “Sacrifice” • Jesus was offered as a “sacrifice of atonement” (3:25) • Response – sacrifice ourselves to God. • Living (6:13), holy (made righteous 3:24), pleasing • “Worship” • Human sin – not worshipping God (1:21) • Only logical response: worship him.
2. Transformed not Conformed • Live in the way of the Kingdom or the World • We need renewed and transformed Minds • Body . . . Mind = everything • Jesus: Luke 10:27 (from Deut 6:5) • Human mind is “futile” and “darkened” (Rom 1:21) • Become “Other-centered” not “Self-centered” • Mix: Spirit Empowering and diligence, faithfulness, perseverance
3. Think of Yourself with Sober Judgment • Paul speaks with apostolic authority (1:5) • A realistic, sober, honest look at ourselves: • Give thanks for our blessings, abilities, giftings. • Admit our weaknesses, failings, sin, dependance. • NOT: “more highly than we ought”. • We are ONE body, characterized by DIVERSITY.
4. Have Different Gifts • Different people are equipped differently • For the mutual good of everyone • Representative sample of Gifts: • Prophecy: Spontaneous revelation from God (used according to our faith) Next three: Instruction – they should be USED !!! • Serving: giving material and financial assistance as needed • Teaching: Explanation & Application of Tradition. (requires study and effort)
4. Have Different Gifts . . . • Encouraging: Pastoral application to daily life. (Appeals to action, sacrifice, overcoming sin) Last three: Have a qualitative note - • Giving: Financial / material stewardship – GENEROUSLY • Leading: On behalf of God. Done DILIGENTLY (Lead people in the way they should go) • Mercy: caring for sick and needy - CHEERFULLY
A Transformed Community • Characterized by “other-centeredness” NOT “self-centeredness” • Two ways to live: • Way of the World: “self-care” • Way of the Kingdom: “other-care”
