  1. CEF Networks lighting: search for equipment Stanislav Sima November 23th, 2004

  2. Dark fibres in RENs are available • More than 20 000 km in Europe (plus some fibres for GN2 and GN2 testbed) • About 33 920 km in USA (including National LambdaRail) • About 6 700 km in Canada But: old and very expensive transmission equipment is mostly used Lucent meeting

  3. Demands on Equipment for CEF RENs • Big differences from ISP (not for profit, known users, SLA, experiments, ….) • Universities, research organisations and NRENs should prefer payment for research and education, not for network equipment • Distances between university premises are usualy short: In-line equipment in huts are not necessary • Low cost transmission equipment enables • networking in developing countries (solving of digital divide), • new research directions, etc. Lucent meeting

  4. CESNET’s approach • NIL for distances up to about 300 km • Multiple long span (n x about 150 km) • CESNET-made equipment based on available optical devices and modules, SPF, XPF, interface cards, FPGA, etc. (for example PC Light 2in1, Combo6) • Testing in CzechLight, CESNET2 • Prepared testing in other NRENs, GN2 testbed, SEEFIRE project, … Lucent meeting

  5. Lucent meeting

  6. CzechLight structure and connections Lucent meeting

  7. Lighting of dark fibre: NIL approach • Production lines G.652, 1550 nm, EDFA • 189 km Praha – Pardubice GE since May 2002 • 235 km Brno – Ostrava GE since June 2003 • 235 km Brno – Ostrava OC-48 in 4 months 2004 • Experimental lines G.652, 1550 nm, EDFA • 160 km Praha – Plzen GE April 2004 PC Light (one side) • 286 km Praha – Brno GE May 2004 (+Raman) • Experimental line G.655+G.652, 1550 nm, EDFA • 298 km Praha – Brno 10 GE November 2004 (+Raman) • More wavelengths possible Lucent meeting

  8. NIL tests in laboratory • G.652 fibre spools, EDFA + Raman: • 325 km GE • 250 km OC-48 • 252 km 2x 10 GE • 290 km 10 G DWDM • G.655 fibre spools (EDFA + Raman): • 302 km 10 G DWDM Big differences between Design, Simulation, Laboratory testing, Field testing Lucent meeting

  9. Research cooperation between CESNET and Lucent ? • CEF Networks recognized as emerging market for transmission and switching equipment • CESNET recognized as leading organization in long-span CEF Networks deployment • Suggested goals of cooperation: • Design of low costs transmission technology for CEF networks • User laboratory and field testing of Lucent equipment Lucent meeting

  10. Acknowledgement • Jan Gruntorad for support and GLIF entry • Lada Altmanova for dark fibre acquiring • Miroslav Karasek and Jan Radil for lighting of CESNET2 and CzechLight fibres • Comment: presented ideas and opinions are result of our ongoing R&D activities and are opened to improvement Lucent meeting
