New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) Main Purpose of NCAP inform car buyers of vehicles’ safety rating promote the development of safer vehicles by automobile manufacturers • Korea NCAP • - From 1999 • - Based on the Motor Vehicle Control Act • Article 32 of 2 (Aug. `02) • - Publish the results (Korean only) • - Website : www.car.go.kr • English version will be available in 2007

  8. Frontal Impact Test • Five step star (★) rating - based on serious(AIS4) head and chest injuries • Door opening & openability , fuel leakage after impact • Two hybridⅢ 50% male dummy - buckled with a 3-point seat belt - driver and front passenger seats

  9. Side Impact Test • Five step star (★) rating - based on head, chest, abdominal, pelvis injuries • Door opening & openability , fuel leakage after impact • One Euro SIDⅠ - buckled with a 3-point seat belt - driver seat • Multi-layered honeycomb

Rollover Test • Calculate a vehicles SSF (static stability factor) at rest T 2H SSF = T : Track width H : Center of gravity height • Dynamic maneuvering tests - using fishhook pattern - measure the vehicles inside tires lift off the pavement - tip : both inside tires lift at least 50mm off simultaneously • Five step star (★) rating

Brake and Head Restraint Test Braking Performance Test • Test method • - vehicle is stopped abruptly • at a speed of 100kph • - wet and dry road conditions • - all vehicle are equipped with ABS • Vehicle stopping distance • Stability of vehicle at a 3.5m lane Head Restraint Test • Measure distances • - from the top of head to • the top of restraint • - from the back of head to • the front of restraint • Classified into one of four • geometric zones

(18%) Vehicle passenger (22%) Motorcycle (17%) Cycle (4%) Pedestrian (39%) Statistics and Future Plan • The new car sales of small truck (not more than 1ton) were 9% of all new car sales. • The largest share of fatalities in car accident was pedestrian as 39%. • The half of frontal crashes was offset crashes. • The number of neck injured persons by rear-end collisions were approx. 260,000. • There was severe injuries on the head by pole side impact. • An Euro SID2 and progressive type honeycomb for side impact test shall be adopted in 2007.
