  1. Making the Punctuation Function • I will learn to use punctuation for effect. • Band 1 11–12 Writing is consistent, stylistically fluent, linguistically strong and accurate; has sense of audience. • Band 2 9–10 Writing is mostly fluent, sometimes linguistically effective and largely accurate; may have some sense of audience.

  2. Convert these 8 sentences into a smaller number. You can omit words. • She was our Latin teacher. • We were in high school. • She was tiny. • She was a birdlike woman. • She was swarthy. • She had dark eyes. • Her eyes were sparkling. • Her hair was graying.

  3. Punctuation can: Make your writing more fluent Create atmosphere/pace Create emphasis = crafting

  4. Group punctuation types

  5. When I was first approached about visiting Sunflower just one thought flew into my mind hell why would I want to leave this a perfect wonderful world, complete with my family and friends why would I trade that for a piece of rock in on the outskirts of the near space-hemisphere hindsight is a beautiful thing from the moment I stepped foot on that luscious green sand I was enveloped in Sunflower’s adoring magic those cloudy grains seemed to welcome my feet with a majestic bow smothering me in thick cream you don’t get that back home back home the sand is a parasite infecting every part of your skin clothing car and anywhere else you carelessly pass after the beach it feeds off transportation and clings onto our minds like a torturous nightmare the green sand named ‘Hive’ by the natives spans the entire circumference of the landscape I had once insultingly called a ‘rock’ beyond the Hive lies the spongy forest of Avalon a rich dense metropolis of vegetation but these are not just any trees nothing stands alone in that forest the very trunks are an outcrop of the cushioned crust of the earth it’s difficult to see where one begins and the other ends the trunks of the elegant dancers sway in the light breeze which float around the island on melodic wave the branches stretch high into the sky gracefully moving their arms into a welcoming embrace I was entranc’d

  6. What effect does this punctuation have? In the valley of Gerty, vast, luscious fruit trees litter the golden slopes at anytime of day. The birds stand still in the mellow breeze and their melodies float away towards the distant coastline without a care in the world. This is heaven: where else would you rather be? There are lush trees, sloping valleys, beautiful crevices and candy-topped mountains. There tweeting birds; soaring skies coated in candyfloss; fast-flowing rivers carving the landscape...it’s there waiting for you.

  7. Can you meet your brief to your deadline? You have 10 minutes to create sentences meeting the following design briefs: 1) 50 words creating a calm atmosphere, highlighting how peaceful people live. 2) 50 words creating a fast-paced buzzing atmosphere describing a city at night.

  8. Extended Metaphors • Remember to consider the CONNOTATIONS. • You want to describe your bed positively: it’s a place you feel safe. • Can you think of an object, person or animal which we can relate to some of these words? Words associated with a good BED

  9. My bed is a fortress The ironwork of its arms protect me from the perils of the day. I can roll and thrash around in denial of my alarm and the iron stands firm to my attack; supporting my body with superb strength. The mattress is a haven; inviting me into her cushioned hugs. She can brush the horrors of the day away with each gentle stroke. My duvet is a warrior protecting me from the cold and cooling my in the heat He lies brazenly in all seasons and never shirks on his duty. It’s the perfect formation to do battle alongside.

  10. Your turn • Based on the effect they have, write down connotations for: full stop / colon / comma • Now think of an object or animal these connotations can be related to. • Write a race report using these objects. Dangerous worlds Expensive Mobile phone Xbox Jeans Draining Comforting Just right Never change Fast Addictive Flattering Dangerous Powerful

  11. Comparatives and Superlatives Band 3 7–8 Writing is clear, competent (if plain) in vocabulary and grammar; errors perhaps frequent, but minor. Band 4 5–6 Writing is clear and accurate in places, and uses limited vocabulary and grammar; errors occasionally serious.

  12. The activities: Basketball Court Race The Ultimate Carrot Thrower Laugh-Marathon Keepy-up Champion
