  1. Hurricanes!!! Information about hurricanes and the damage they cause, how they are rated, and the conditions that they cause.

  2. What are Hurricanes? • A hurricane starts life as a tropical depression. If it gains wind speed, it will become a tropical storm. If it continues to gain wind speed, it will become a hurricane! • Low-pressure systems created by the evaporation of large amounts of ocean water. The ocean water creates bands on cumulonimbus clouds. • High-pressure air tries to push into the low-pressure zone. This causes the rain band to start to rotate counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere. This rotation creates the eye of the hurricane. The eye walls are where the strongest winds of the hurricane are located.

  3. The Eye of the HURRICANE! This is the way the hurricanes look from outer space! Also on the right you will see an image that shows you the Dense Cirrus Overcast, the Eye, Eye walls, and the rain bands that the ocean water creates.

  4. The Conditions • There are four conditions of the hurricanes: low-pressure, warm temperatures, moist areas, and tropicals wind patterns. .answers.com/main/content/img/oxford/O blogs.palmbeachpost.com/.../

  5. How long hurricanes last • The period of time that hurricanes last is depended on how strong the hurricanes are and where it takes place. • Hurricanes are rated by the Simpson-Saffir scale, by their wind speed, and storm surge. The Simpson-Saffir system is shown to the right. It looks like solar panels. pvastro0710.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

  6. The season for HURRICANES! • The season for hurricanes is the summer months and they begin on the coast of Africa. This is showing the summer months and how there risk’s get higher and higher.

  7. Are HURRICANES dangerous? • While that question may be an obvious, there are specific dangers involved when hurricanes strike land area. • Hurricane-force winds can easily destroy poorly constructed buildings and mobile homes. • Flying debris becomes missiles and can damage windows. Automobiles can be a serious threat to people out in the storm.

  8. Damage • Wind- fallen trees and utility poles, power outages, damaged roofs and signs. • Water/ rainfall- flooded rivers, lakes and roads, water damage to houses. • Storm surge- 8-10’ or higher waves that erode beaches, wash away beach house and boats, and flood beach front businesses.

  9. How HURRICANES are Categorized • Hurricanes are categorized by their wind speed.
