Independent Reading • Each quarter you will be reading a novel on your own. • You will keep track of your reading on your reading log that you will turn in each week. • Please see handout. • Tell me the name of the book you have decided on by this Friday, September 23rd. • First log will be collected Friday, September 30th.

  23. 2nd reading: As we read… • I make a moving picture in my mind of the words I read. • This picture changes as I read more. • This picture helps me remember and better understand what I’m reading! • Use your double-entry diary to record what you visualize.

  24. Writing prompt • What if you had to live with all the trash you ever created? What if there was no garbage collection service to remove, hide away, bury all our waste? What if every water bottle, every Styrofoam take-a-way box, every milk jug, every cereal box we ever bought, we had to somehow dispose of in our own house or yard? How would your home look different? How would your buying choices change?

  25. Brainstorming: Disaster!

  26. Turning our thoughts into a full sentence. Expository writing (factual writing) uses a certain format: Topic Sentence Fact, Detail, or Reason Sentence Example, Explanation, Evidence Setence Concluding Sentence

  27. Green --- Go! Introduce your topic. • Yellow --- Slow down! Give a fact, detail, or reason. • Red—Stop! Explain yourself. • Green– Remind your reader of your topic.
