Joker opening sequence Martha McAuley
The scene opens with an establishing wide shot that tracks in towards the character who is putting on clown-like makeup. We see an extreme close up of the side profile to see the paint brush connecting with his face.
We get a close up of his side profile to see his facial expressions trying to smile and be happy but failing as his mis en scene connotes. We then get an over the shoulder shot of him in the reflection of the mirror, physically attempting to make himself smile by pulling the corners of his mouth with his fingers upwards, forcing a smile, at the same time we get a pull focus from the shot to see him in the mirror.
The shot changes to a close up of his entire face forcefully pulling his face up and we see a black tear of makeup roll down his cheek which is when he drops his hand and we see all his makeup ruined and the scene cuts.
The next shot is an establishing shot to show the street in which the previous man seen is working as a clown on the side of the road. A sound bridge is used of upbeat, clown music in the shot prior to the scene which also creates the contrapuntal music impression of the man seen before. The establishing and wide shot looks desaturated and we have the superimposition of ‘Warner Bros Productions’ appear on the screen.
The superimposed text proceeds to appear as each shot goes on of the clown dancing around putting on a show. In the background we hear the indistinct chatter of people but as the sound of a group of boys loudens, the scene very abruptly takes a turn as the boys push the sign out of the mans hands and run away with it – causing him to fall to the ground and chase after them.
The soundtrack changes to the sounds of a busy street and the group of boys chase after the leader who holds the sign. The desaturation of the atmosphere allows the bold yellow sign to stick out as well as the green afro wig and yellow waist coat the clown wears. The group of boys lead him down a dark and foreshadowing alleyway where they go on to beat him up, running away leaving him stranded on the floor
Finally after the boys run away the camera tracks back from a mid shot to a wide and low shot to show the remains of his sign and to see the misery and pain he is feeling through his actions.
