  1. Delicatessen Opening sequence analysis

  2. This first camera shot is a long shot/establishing shot to establish the setting and the surroundings of the scene • There is lowkey lighting to give it an eerie effect and set the atmosphere • There are sound effects of dark and mysterious music to help emphasise the scary tone

  3. The previous shot uses the editing technique of a dissolve to merge into the next. The shots dissolving together, widen the audience’s perspective of the setting and where the scene is taking place.

  4. This next shot pans round to a mid shot of the butcher’s waist so that the audience can see the blade of the knife being sharpened before we even see the butchers face. The shot tilts upwards as well as zooms in on the characters face to end with a low angle making the butcher seem powerful and scary.

  5. The shot then travels past the butcher and through a tunnel with the sound effects of the knife sharpening still occurring in the background to remind the audience of where this is happening. The volume is changed as we travel through the tunnel and an echoed effect is put on so it makes the audience feel like they are there.

  6. Then there is an extreme close up shot of the man’s eyes in the darkness as they stand out and create tension. The suspense builds up to the handheld shot that is moving around to stop and stay still as the bin lid is lifted and we get almost a worms eye view low angle shot to show the powerful and higher status butcher who cuts the scene off by covering the lens with his knife.
