  1. Outline of the course • The course is divided into two parts • The theoretical part • The project work • The two parts will run in parallel

Outline of the course • The first part is articulated in three sections: • The first section section will focus on the following issues: • the regional disequilibria in the European Union • the rationale for a European cohesion policy • the framework of cohesion policies • the European strategy of growth

  3. Outline of the course • The second section will focus on the following issues: • the theory of local economic development • a focus on social capital • the cycle of a local economic development programme

  4. Outline of the course • The third section will focus on the following issues: • short history of the E.U. • the institutions of the E.U. • the decision making process of the E.U. • the legal acts of the E.U.

  5. Outline of the course • The second part of the course is a project work. The class divided in teams will prepare a report on a European region. The report will contain three main chapters: • A statistical analysis of the region • An outline of the development strategy of the region • The identification of projects suitable for the development of the region

  6. Outline of the course • An intermediate and a final report will be presented and discussed in classroom. • The final mark of the exam will be a weighted average (50%) between the mark of a written exam on the theoretical part of the course and the mark on the project work

Outline of the course • 11 March (Project work) • Second phase of the project work starts: delivery of the operational regional programmes (second chapter of the report) • 18 March (Lectures) • The cycle of LDP • 24 March (Project work) • Final phase of the project work starts: delivery of EU data bank of projects

Outline of the course • 25 March- 1 April (Project work) • Presentation of the first part of the report (first and second chapter) • 28 April- 6 May (Lectures) • A focus on social capital • History and institutions of the EU • 12 May- onwards (Project work) • Final presentations of the report (the whole report)
