  2. THE DISCIPLE LIKE HIS MASTER

  3. INTRODUCTION. FGBMFI: An Organisation of Ordinary men manifesting an Extra-ordinary lifestyle in the Marketplace. “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13-14 NIV). THE MARKETPLACE REACTION.. They saw…… something in Peter & John that is intangible yet visible, real and powerful in effect. They realised……discovered that Peter & John were not theologians but ordinary laymen. They were astonished….. Greatly surprised and left in wonderment. They took note….. Recognized them as men who had companied with Jesus and were now like him.

  4. BECOMING LIKE JESUS. The natural man cannot please God no matter what it does because of it’s inherent nature. “ For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.”Rom 8:6-8 KJV. God’s solution - Spiritual Surgery. “Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.” Ezek 36:25-27KJV. God’s pre-determined post operative destination for your life is for you to be conformed to the image of His Son, Jesus. “For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the first-born among many brethren”. Rom 8:29-30 RSV.

  5. GOD’S PRE-DETERMINED DESTINATION.. How do you commence your journey in order to arrive at this destination. 1. Believe and Receive Christ. “But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12-13 RSV. The new birth entailing genuine repentance and faith is the entry visa/ticket. 2, Be with him continually. “ And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils, “ Mark 3:14-15KJV. The primary purpose of our calling is to be with him so that He can rub off his life on us and thereby transform us into his likeness. Being comes before doing.

  6. THE ENTRY VISA/TICKET. THE NEW BIRTH - WHY? HOW? WHEN? WHY? : The imperative of the new birth. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Sin shortens everything about a man. Rom 3:23. The wages (salary) of sin is death: Spiritual and Physical death are the earnings or Return on Investment of every sinner. Rom 6:23. Unbelievers are alienated from the family of God, strangers to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. (Ephe 2:12). Unbelievers can never please God because the carnal agendais contrary to God’s agenda (Rom 8:7-8). The flesh life cannot be improved upon but must be terminated and exchanged with Christ’s new life.

  7. LAYING THE RIGHT FOUNDATION. HOW: THE BIBLICAL BIRTH PROCESS. The ABC of salvation. A. - Acknowledge and repent of your sin out of deep conviction. (Matt 9:12, Mk 1:15, Acts 2: 37-38; John 16:8-11). B. - Believethe gospel: i.e. receive the provision God made for your redemption/reconciliation through Jesus Christ. (1Cor 15:1-5; Rom 6: 1-7, 11,14; Gal 3:26-28). C. – Confess Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour by receiving the offer of exchange of your life of sin with his life of righteousness by the cross (Rom 10:9-10). Without conviction there can be no genuine repentance, without repentance there can be no genuine conversion, without conversion there can be no true conformity to the image of Christ. Christ can only be formed in you after he has been born in you - you cannot grow a life that is not born. Ideally, FGBMFI membership register must constantly be synchronized with the register in heaven – the book of life.

  8. EVIDENCE OF THE NEW BIRTH. WHEN? HOW DO I KNOW THAT I AM BORN AGAIN. The offer of the new birth has been available since the death of Jesus over 2000 years ago, but it takes place anytime a man repents, believes and receives what Jesus did for him personally. What is born inside of you is Christ (Rom 1:27; 3:4). Evidence of the new birth includes: Inner witness, seal and leading of the Holy Spirit. (Rom 8: 9, 14,16; Ephe 1: 13-14). Hatred of Sin. (I John 3:9; Peace and Lovefor God, man and all creation. (1John 4:7;) Strong appetite for the word of God and prayer. (1Pet 2:2) Zeal and commitment to God and his purpose (2Cor 5:15, 18-21). The signs that follow (casting out demons, speaking in new tongues, taking up serpents, immunity from poisoning, healing the sick through laying on of hands) Mk 16:17-18. iii.

  9. GROWING UP. DISCIPLESHIP: THE PROCESS OF GROWING THE NEW LIFE. Discipleship is the lifelong process through which Christ is formed and becomes manifest in and through a believer (Matt 4:19; 19:21;). When you are born again, you receive Jesus as SAVIOUR and you become a believer; when you receive Jesus asLORD (Master), you become a disciple. Discipleship is entered into after being born again and involves a Master- Apprenticeship relationship with the prime objective of becoming exactly like the master Jesus. (John 13: 15-16). It entails a definite and deliberate yoking with Jesus in order to follow in His steps (Matt 11:28-29;1Peter 2:21). It requires: i) denying self. ii) taking up your cross daily. iv) following Jesus. (Luke 9:23).

  10. BECOMING LIKE THE MASTER. “Follow me and I will make you…” Matt 4:19. This is the next instruction to the believer, if Christ is to entrust Himself to him. ((John2:23-24). After being born (again), he must “be made” through diligent, intimate following of Jesus to learn and imitate the master’s life. Following Christ: How? i. By His Personal example (1Pet 2:21). ii. By His word (John 8:31-32). iii. By the Holy Spirit. (Rom 8:14; Gal 5:25). iv By the example of disciplers (I Tim 4: 12, Phil 4:9).

  11. BECOMING LIKE THE MASTER. Following and Learning from the personal example of Jesus. His faith in God – Total and unwavering (Jn 11:41-42). His prayer life- kingdom focused content & Consistent (Matt 6:9-13; Jn17; Mk1:35;). His personal habits: -Eating – Didn’t live to eat, but eat to live (John 4:34; Matt 4:4) -Sleeping – Slept only to rest (Mk 1:35; lk 8:22-24). His attitude: - to life: Humility and Obedience (Phil2:5-8; Heb 5:8). - to work: Diligence & Focus (John 9:5; 4:34). - to opponents: Truth in love & Forgiveness (Matt 23:25-26; lk 23:34). His relationships: - with family: Obedience & Respect (Lk 2:51; Lk 2:1-10). - with friends/associates: Service & Care (Jn13:13-17). Constant prayer of a disciple: Lord, what will you have me do?

  12. BECOMING LIKE THE MASTER. Following and Learning from His word. The word of God is His comprehensive instrument for transforming lives. The scriptures are all about Jesus (Lk24:27). Seek and cling to the truth of the word (John 8:31-32). Feed on it daily through diligent systematic study (Matt4:4). Allow it to burn away every dross clinging to your life (Jeremiah 23:29). Allow it to demolish every hardness of in your heart (Jer 23:29). Engage it to build your faith (Rom 10:17, John 6:63). Employ it to guide and illumine your path (Ps 119:105) Apply it to replenish and nourish your life (Is 55:10-11; 2Tim 3:16-17). In FGBMFI, corporate discipleship exposure is being facilitated through the monthly study of the word using “Christian Life is Exciting”.

  13. BECOMING LIKE THE MASTER. Following and Learning by the Holy Spirit. Recognise and obey His still small voice. (Acts 13:1-3). Constantly seek His counsel (John 14:16). Hearken to His leading (Rom 8:14; Acts16:6-10). Engage His help in prayer (Rom 8:26-27). Submit to His teaching and guidance (John 16:13-14; 1John 2: 27). Employ his help in ministry ( John 16:7-11)

  14. BECOMING LIKE THE MASTER. Following and Learning through Human Disciplers. “let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” 1 Tim 4:12KJV. Disciplers are men and women who by virtue of progress in their walk with the lord are assigned by him to raise other disciples on His behalf while thy themselves are continuing in following the master. Disciplers are living audio-visual examples whose lives disciples can see, hear, touch, examine and handle in their learning process of becoming like Jesus. Ideally, following the pattern of Christ, in FGBMFI. Husbands are to disciple their wives. National Directors are to disciple field representatives. Field Representatives are to disciple Chapter Presidents. Chapter Presidents are to disciple their EXCO. Chapter EXCO are to disciple the members. However, only a disciple can make a disciple. (Matt 28:19).

  15. CONTINUITY IN FOLLOWING.. “The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord..” Matt 10:24-25KJV. Building Intimacy with Christ. Basic ingredients in “the making” of a disciple: 1. Living by Faith. (Rom 1;16-17). II) Diligent study and application of the word of God (2 Tim 2:15; 3:15-17). III) Consistent Persevering Prayer (I Thess 5: 17). IV) Walking and living by the Spirit.(Gal 5:25.) V) Practical & prompt obedience (2Cor 10:6). VI) Abiding with Him. (John 8:31; 15: 1-8). VII) Keeping the Destination in focus. (Rom 8:29. Phil 3: 8-14).

  16. FINALLY. As you follow and grow up in all things into him (Ephe4:15): Christ is progressively being formed in you (Gal 4:19). You become an example to the believers (1Tim 4:12). You become useful to God and man (2Tim 2:20-21). Those who follow you will not make a shipwreck of their lives (Matt 23:13). Men in the marketplace will begin to take note that you have been with Jesus and will be attracted to Him to the end that the kingdom of God is established. (Acts 4:13-14 NIV). To become like Jesus is a task that must be achieved if your life is to have relevance in God’ purpose here on earth and if you are to ultimately make it to heaven.
