Cold War Spreads Around the World • CIA – Central Intelligence Agency • Covert operations • Mid East • Britain boycotted in Iran • US feared Iran would turn to Soviets for help • CIA brought back former Iranian leader (Shah) • Oil fields now controlled by W. countries • And you wonder why they hate us

Ger • The Soviet version of NATO • Summit in Geneva • “open skies” policy – Ike suggests nuclear attack protection by being able to fly over each other’s territory • Soviets reject this

Cold War Takes to the Skies • Nikita Khrushchev – new Soviet leader • Sputnik – artificial satellite • Soviets launch 1957 • Starts US space program • U2 Scandal • U2 spy planes flying over Soviet • Problems • Ike sends one last operations • Francis Gary Powers is shot down, imprisoned for 10 years in Soviet Union • Ike would not apologize heightening hostilities
