Introduction Elementary I course - Dutch March- May 2011 Piet Meijer IT&C, Dutch for Foreigners Welcome to the Introduction El courses Dutch for beginners at the TU Delft My name is CW, I’m one of the 6 teachers DUTCH for foreigners at this department. The Delft Method for learning Dutch was developed here. First some information about the classes, there are day classes and evening classes. Courses & levels Day classes are intensive, but fast: 5 weeks to 2nd level. 3 general courses Dutch: beginners, intermediate and advanced, followed by some specific courses aimed at studies at this university. Another possibility is the national exam, the Staatsexamen NT@, not required here but maybe useful elsewhere, some companies or other universities ask for it. As you see, you will be able to follow courses one after the other, in such a way you can do the whole program of 4 courses within 1 year.     4. Enrollment procedure for others than Msc/exch.-stud.: You are already enrolled ! Timetable was sent to you this week. If not so: you are on the waiting list; wait for an email (end of first course week). Enrollment procedure for Msc/exch.-stud.: Step 1: Introduction test March 23 Obligatory for Msc and Exch.-students Content ch. 1- 2 of the course book “Nederlands voor buitenlanders” 3th edition Materials: website www.nt2online.nl/demoles Format: listening test (dictation), min. score both texts 80% Needed: Take your headphones with you Place & time : Wednesday March 23, computer room B, fac. TBM, 1st floor For students with surnames starting with A – G: 17.45 hrs. For students with surnames starting with H – O : 18.15 hrs. For students with surnames starting with P – Z: 18.45 hrs. To register for one of these classes a introduction test is obligatory, for Msc and Exch.-students, not for those who pay themselves and PHd-ers . The test is about GROEN BOEK 1-2, takes place here, Wednesday 26 at a quarter to 6.     6. Results: Next day (Thursday March 24) 10:00 on Blackboard (wm1115 Q4) If score for both texts 80% or more? ? Enroll via Blackboard from 10 AM Timetable also on Blackboard Enroll in group that suits you best (first come, first served) If all groups are full? Place in next course (Aug. 29, 2011) guaranteed. You will find them on the cd, in the book, on cd-rom, translations in 20 languages, with feedback, in the conversation lessons, in the listening tests you make before or after classes.Texts are the central element.     8. How to study? How do I prepare? 1. listen to texts WITH book. Look up words you don’t know. Try to solve form problems with grammar, STEP 2: do you understand? Every word? Repeat what you hear!!! STEP 3 SEVERAL times Try to understand without reading along STEP 4 Fluent listening, understanding every single bit! STEP 5: try to fill in holes in text. Success? Leer door te lezen, te luisteren en te begrijpen. Hoe heb je je eigen moedertaal geleerd? Door te luisteren! Veel input is nodig om een taal te leren.     14. The lessons Most of the work is done by YOU, at home! That’s why we can have pleasant, informative and sometimes amusing conversations in class. At least when you have prepared properly. Often it is fun to discuss things with people from so many different backgrounds. (15 students, 15 nationalities, also interesting for teacher. ) Most of the work is done by YOU, at home! The daily listening tests In order to prove how hard you studied and how well you understand now every bit of the text, you are asked dot make a prompter test before or after (depending on you timetable / schedule) class. It is on computers upstairs , right above the classrooms 5C and 5D. After login in (personal login numbers will be provided) one selects the GROEN BOEK, listen to a frgamment of the text that has vbeen prepared for that day, listen again and then type in what you hear. No conversation, a dictation,. After each phrase feedback follows: X words out of 9 all right!’ After the whole fragment: feedback on percentages. Minimum: 75%You will be given a personal login number.     17. The final grades Throughout the course you will have ample opportunities to assemble your grades. There are 3 homework test (cloze texts, in schedule) , we test you listening skills on computer, speaking skills in class and writing skills by 2 assignments. Moreover attendance will be noted. This may amount to a sufficient percentage (70%) which means then that you have successfully completed the course and do not need to sit the final examThroughout the course you will have ample opportunities to assemble your grades.
