1. Determiner • Determiner consist of: • Article the, a/an • Demonstrative this/these, that/those • Number one, two, five, etc. • Possessives my, your, etc. • Quantifier some, many, etc. • NOTE: Determiners are usually placed before the noun • Examples: • - The cars - My coach • - Two guests - That dog • - Many children
2. Adjective Adjective can be adjective phrase or adjective clause NOTE: Generally, determiner and adjective phrase are placed as pre-modifier. Examples: Red adjective The red ball adjective phrase N The red ball that kicked by a boy is mine adjective clause that-clause WH-clause
3. Relative clause • Relative clause in a noun phrase is frequently placed as post-modifier. • NOTE: The relative clause is also called as adjective • clause • Example: • That building is the house where I live • relative clause • The house where I live is big • relative clause
4. Participle • Past participles, verbal that end in –ed (for regular verbs) or other forms (for irregular verbs), are combined with complement and modifiers and become part of important phrasal structure. • Examples: • - The pond, frozen over since early December, is ……….. • modifies “pond” • The disabled users • participle
5. Gerund • Gerund, verbal that end in –ing and that act as noun, frequently are associated with modifiers and complements. • Example: • I like this drawing and painting program • gerund gerund • John enjoyed swimming in the lake after dark • gerund
