Review • Literacy Test- must pass reading and writing tests in order to vote • Most set up for people to fail • Poll Tax- citizens must pay tax to vote • Most blacks could not afford this tax • Grandfather Clause- men whose grandfathers voted before 1867 were exempt from poll tax and literacy tests • Blacks were slaves and could not note in 1867

  3. Origin of Jim Crow • White performers painted cork on their faces to resemble Blacks • They danced and sang- Minstrels • “Wheel about and turn about and do just so, every time I wheel about I jump Jim Crow” • Laws named after these characters
