What will we learn? • We will focus on the main long-term causes of World War 1. • We will define each term and analyze how it influenced the outbreak of war.
Militarism • Militarism-the building up of nations army • This occurred because nations sought to protect their colonies. • Militarism lead to a rising tension in Europe.
Alliances • The rise of militarism lead to formation of alliances. • An alliance is a pact between nations to defend each other if one is attacked.
Alliances • Triple Entente- Great Britain, Russia and France • Triple Alliance- Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary
Nationalism • Nationalism- is the intense loyalty or pride in one’s country or group. • Nationalism encouraged certain groups of people to separate from existing nations. • Ethnic groups demanded a nation of their own.
Imperialism • European nations divided Africa. • Imperialism is the desire of a nation to take over another nation for their natural resources. • Nations such as Austria-Hungary were imperializing in the Balkans. • Serbia was being imperialized by the Austria-Hungarians, this angered many nationalists
ASSASsINATION!! • Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was killed by Gavrilo Princip. • Gavrilo Princip was a Serbian nationalist. • Princip was a member of the black hand which sought to overthrow Austria-Hungarian control.
