  1. Functional Text • I can interpret details in functional text to follow directions, solve problems, follow procedures, and answer questions.

  2. Essential Questions • What is functional text? • How do we use details from functional text for a specific purpose? • How do we locate specific information in functional text?

  3. What is Functional Text? • Functional text is used for everyday information. It helps you function in your day-to-day life. It’s text that explains or gives information. • For example, if I wanted to bake a cheesecake, I would use arecipe. • If I needed to put a new toy together, I would use the instruction manual. • If I wanted to know what my teacher had planned today in class, I would read theschedule.

  4. What you need to know! • All functional text has a purpose. • There are many different types of functional text. • Different types of functional text have different forms.

  5. Slates out! • On your slates I want you to think back and brainstorm types of functional text. • You will have one minute on your own, and then an additional 30 seconds to try to get the largest list for your group. • Good luck!!!

  7. Tricks to reading functional text!!! • When answering questions on functional text, first read the question so you know what to look for. • Once you have key words you can go to the functional text to locate them to answer the questions. • Let’s practice! Hope you kept those slates out!

  8. Here we go!!! How many cups of milk do you need? Ingredients •2 1/4cups all purpose flour•1 1/3 cups sugar•3 teaspoons baking powder•1/2 teaspoon salt•1/2 cup shortening•1 cup milk•1 teaspoon vanilla•2 large eggsEasy Cupcake Recipe Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Line cupcake pans with paper liners. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl.  Add shortening, milk, and vanilla.  Beat for 1 minute on medium speed.  Scrape side of bowl with a spatula. Add eggs to the mixture.  Beat for 1 minute on medium speed.  Scrape bowl again.  Beat on high speed for 1 minute 30 seconds until well mixed. Spoon cupcake batter into paper liners until 1/2 to 2/3 full. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 5 minutes in pans then remove and place on wire racks to cool completely. Once cupcakes are completely cooled, frost with your favorite frosting recipe or decorate as you desire. 1 cup milk How long do the cupcakes cool in the pans? 5 minutes

  10. It’s your turn • You will see a set of directions. On your slates write 3 questions one could answer based on the functional text! • Write your questions and turn your slate over when you are done! • We will share in threeminutes:)

  11. Three ?s time!!! Try to create challenging questions!

  12. Closure • On your slates, write two things that you think are the most important to things to remember when reading different forms of functional text!

  13. Independent practice • On a sheet of notebook paper create five questions about the functional text before. • After you have five, switch papers, and answer your friend’s questions. • Hand your paper’s in the basket when done!!!
