    1. SWMPS- client’s view Beulah Lockhart Project Manager Plan A & Sustainable Construction Good morning everyone and thank you very much for inviting me here today to speak to you – when I was asked to go to Gatwick I did wonder which exotic country I would be presenting in, I did not realise it was the Airport!!! So good morning – my name is James Pogmore and I am the Programme Manager for Plan A & Sustainable Construction at Marks and Spencer. So Sustainability means many different things to many different people in many different ways. They are all valid whatever stage of life they are in – in fact just last week my 11 year old cousin was asked to write a short piece on sustainability and the harmful environmental effects of oil on fish. He wrote and I quote “ when mum opened a tin of sardines last night it was full of oil and all of the sardines were DEAD!” This morning I would like to update you on Marks and Spencer’s approach to Sardines I mean Sustainability and the well published Plan A. I will then talk about sustainable construction specifically, want we have done and key lessons learnt.Good morning everyone and thank you very much for inviting me here today to speak to you – when I was asked to go to Gatwick I did wonder which exotic country I would be presenting in, I did not realise it was the Airport!!! 2. In January 2007 we launched our plan. We called it Plan A because there is no Plan B. It is a “200million five year eco plan which addresses 5 key area and touches every part of our business. The plan itself is a big step – I don’t think there’s many businesses that have such a detailed, cohesive, or dare I say Holistic plan You’ll notice that it’s not just about Climate change. That’s because sustainability has to encompass more than that. On our crowded planet anything that moves is being consumed - unless it moves very fast! So our 5 pillars cover Climate change – to become carbon neutral and stop our impact warming the planet by reducing the amount of energy we need and getting it from renewable sources. Waste - to send nothing to landfill by reducing or eliminating waste where possible and finding new ways to recycle and re-use things whenever we can Raw materials - we will ensure key raw materials come from the most sustainable sources possible in order to protect the environment and the world’s natural resources Fair Partner – one that makes a difference to livelihoods and communities around the world And health so we can all live healthier lifestyles from our food, water, air and lifestyle. M&S are just one step in the chain and to do this properly we have to engage our customers and suppliers in the same mission. We can educate people through our communications and put advisors in store. Most of all we have to make it easier for them to do the right thing. In January 2007 we launched our plan. 4. Early on, we realised that in order to meet our 100 Plan A commitments – many of which cut across a number of business areas – we would have to challenge our 'traditional' ways of working…the need to truly work 'cross-business' to enable delivery by pillar – Climate, Waste, Raw Materials, Fair Partner and Health. To enable this – reporting into the How we do business committee, chaired by Stuart – we have now formed 5 'steering groups‘, one for each pillar, made up of multi-disciplined teams from all business areas. So in Head Office, we effectively have a ‘virtual team’ of over 60 people…or ‘Champions’, each owning their part of Plan A. 5. M&S will take action across:

    11. Sustainable Construction So that was the plan from the corporate View – I will now go through in some more detail some of the work that we have completed and principles that we work towards within the Property and Store Development AreaSo that was the plan from the corporate View – I will now go through in some more detail some of the work that we have completed and principles that we work towards within the Property and Store Development Area

    12. Where we started… Carbon Water Waste Materials Biodiversity Travel & Access Communities Archaeology & Heritage Procurement 70% through contractual change 30% through education – Hearts & Minds As already mentioned we would not have been able to deliver this without the buy-in from ‘Critical Friends’ – our suppliers being the most important friends to us. We therefore created the MARKS and SPENCER SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION Manual which clearly outlines what we as Marks and Spencer expect across all areas from Carbon to Materials to Biodiversity to Procurement – you can see the list on the slide. This makes sure that we are all on the same page and able to deliver as one with no ambiguity over what is expected. It includes for example policies and case sudies It is important to remember that the first 70% is easy to deliver through telling people what they have to do and contractual change. Education including hearts and minds the final 30% is the most difficult and can make all the difference. 14. SWMP – Journey & benefits Robust reporting A working waste management process KPIs- measuring the supply chain’s performance Compliance Driver for change Planning Cost Savings

    15. SMARTWaste Monthly data collection SWMP Helicopter view Compliance

    16. Client leadership Look for the quick wins Clarity of measurement Supply chain engagement Ask questions you’ve never asked before! Lessons learned So after all of that, what are the main lessons that we have learnt You can see the list of lessons learnt on the slide – the top 3 that I would pick are Firstly Integrate with business processes – Sustainability cannot be seen as an extra Secondly Pace – things are changing all the time you need to keep up to date – use your critical friends And Finally – Impacts may not be where you expect them to be – make sure you understand wher they are and what your drivers are I hope my presentation has been of use and thank you very much for your time Enjoy the rest of your conferenceSo after all of that, what are the main lessons that we have learnt You can see the list of lessons learnt on the slide – the top 3 that I would pick are Firstly Integrate with business processes – Sustainability cannot be seen as an extra Secondly Pace – things are changing all the time you need to keep up to date – use your critical friends And Finally – Impacts may not be where you expect them to be – make sure you understand wher they are and what your drivers are I hope my presentation has been of use and thank you very much for your time Enjoy the rest of your conference
