Objectives of the Learning Visit • Learn about the future outlook on global green markets • Learn new and innovative greening technologies • Find out about the link between industry and the academe in green innovation and technology generation and dissemination • Look at the enabling framework conditions that support the shift to Green Economic Development, especially with regard the inclusion of SMEs • Witness concrete examples of greening in everyday life in Korea • Understand the business case of going green in the Korean context • Learn about the importance of Renewable Energy for Korea and the actual status of its promotion • Establish contacts with green service providers and suppliers of greening technologies who can possibly be tapped for matchmaking with the SMEs in the Philippines • Learn about the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI)

  5. Profile of Visited Companies Green Technology Center - Korea A government funded think tank that coordinates and supports national green technology R&D policies in collaboration with Korea’s ministries and agencies.

Learnings • Deliberate decision of Korea to go green in 1998 was expressly declared by its national leadership • MSMEs have to evolve to the needs of the global economy • The greatest hurdle towards Green Economic Development is that “Pinoys” think that going green is a cost that we are willing to compromise • Businesses that embrace green economy concept will be the ones to survive in the future • South Korea has a green plan and puts money where its mouth is. • Green sustainable development is a key national strategy

Way Forward • Waste Upcycling project with urban poor (Cebu) • Promotion of slow life travel (Bohol) • Build Back Better (Bantayan Island, Cebu) • Green Awards (Bohol) • Greening the Tourism Value Chains (Albay, Negros Occidental) • Greening the Supply Chains in Hotel and Restaurants (Cebu, Bohol) • Greening of Communities/Villages (Negros Occ & Bacolod) • Green Technology Encounter (Negros Occidental) • Green Exhibits )Bicol, Albay) • Matchmaking between Green Suppliers and MSMEs (Albay) • Tourism Water Supply Infrastructure Program (Cebu) • Advocacy on Renewable Energy Systems

  16. Recommendations • Sustain the GED network with DTI as the anchor • Come up with directory of participants from the three learning visits • DTI to tap learning visit participants during SMERA or as green advisers/coaches
