  2. Birth • I was born on June 25, 1899 in Kamenetz-Podolsky, Ukraine.

  3. The Move to the U.S. • I moved to the United States with his family in April of 1906. After my release from the Ellis Island Immigrant station, we settled in Philadelphia.

  4. School • In 1917 Igraduated from High School. I began architecture at the University of Pennsylvania but dropped out to become a singer.

  5. Starting his Career • I began my career as being a local “street singer” and actually became quite popular in my area.

  6. Identity • I took on the title “Street Singer” to avoid embarasment to my family. Listeners demanded to know my identity, but I did not reveal it until five months after my 1931 debut on CBS.

  7. The Big Time • The following year he was off to Hollywood to appear in The Big Broadcast of 1932 with other radio stars, including Bing Crosby, Kate Smith and the Boswell Sisters.

  8. Film Business • The film industry brought me out of retirement, and at age 82 Ireturned as a cabaret singer at “The Cookery” in Greenwich Village in 1982.

  9. People’s Opinions • Reviewing my performance, John S. Wilson wrote in The New York Times that my voice had ''a delightful patina of period charm”. Hearing good news like that made it worth my while.

  10. Death • On October 5, 1997, I died in Greenwhich Village. My life as a singer was very good and was worth it in the end.
