  3. Statistics • Multiple scientific studies show that children who get a slow start in learning to read are not simply experiencing a developmental lag, but are unlikely to catch up. (Hall 2006) • If a child is struggling to read on level in first grade, there is an 88% chance that child will struggle in fourth grade. (Juel 1988) • 74% of struggling fourth grade readers will continue to struggle in ninth grade. (Francis 1996)

Math Concepts • Quick recall of addition and subtraction up to 20 • Read, write, and compare numbers to1000 • Two-digit whole number addition or subtraction with explanation on how they solve (with and without renaming) • Estimate sums and differences of whole numbers • Describe how 2- and 3-dimenstional shapes are the same and different • Measure to the nearest inch, centimeter, yard, foot, and meter – pound, ounce, kilogram, & gram • Tell time to the nearest 5 minutes • Make change from a dollar, add & subtract money • Sort and classify items based on characteristics to create bar and picture graphs • Multiplication and division – solve problems using manipulatives, pictures, and/or repeated addition and subtraction.
