  2. Chapter 1: Perspectives on sexuality Psychosocial orientation This refers to the way we perceive sexuality. There is both a psychological factor and a social factor. This includes emotions, social norms, and attitudes. This psychosocial orientation differs between cultures because factors such as attitudes and social norms are different among different cultures. Sex for procreation This idea means that the only reason for a couple to engage in intercourse is for the purpose to have children, any other reason is simply immoral. This idea also considers any other sexual act such as oral sex or masturbation to be sinful.

  3. Eve VS. Mary Eve and Mary are opposing views of women. Eve is portrayed as a temptress and evil whereas Mary is a graceful, caring, and pure.

  4. Chapter 2: Sex research: methods and problems Sexology This is the study of sexuality. The goals are to discover and gain knowledge about human sexuality. This can be difficult to attain because it involves the private areas of our lives. Non-experimental research methods Case studies: gather in depth information on a single subject or a small group Survey: gather information through questionnaires or interviews of a large group of people Direct Observation: gather information by observing subjects Experimental Research gather information by manipulation variables in a controlled environment

  5. Chapter 3: female sexual anatomy and physiology Genital Self Exam Becoming familiar with your own body is important for a women’s health. You will be able to detect changes that may become a health risk. This exam will also help you familiarize yourself you what each part is and what it does as well as discover what is pleasurable for you.

  6. Menstruation If conception does not occur, a woman’s uterine lining is sloughed off. This is a cycle that occurs about once every month and lasts 2 to 6 days. The cycle is different for every woman. Breast Self Exam Just like a genital self exam, a breast self exam is important to your health. Knowing what is normal or not is good way to stay healthy.

  7. Chapter 4: male sexual anatomy AND PHYSIOLOGY Genital Self Exam It is important to know your own body so that you can notice changes. If a change is detected, you can take care of any health risks.

  8. Circumcision This is the surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis. This is practiced throughout the world for various religious and health reasons. The health reasons have been debated, there are both positive and negatives on the subject. A negative point of view is that this surgical procedure is not nessecary and is traumatizing. This happens when a male becomes excited or aroused. An erection is mostly caused by physiological factors, but some psychological factors have a role as well. Ejaculation is the process where semen expelled from the body through the penis. This is done by contractions in the prostate, seminal vesicles, ampulla, and the muscles that surround the urethral bulb and root of the penis.

  9. Chapter 5: Gender Issues Gender Identity Formation This is formed both biologically and socially. Biologically, factors contribute to our gender from the moment of conception and differentiate us as male or female in both body and brain. Socially, we are susceptible to the views and ideas of our society at an extremely early age. Theses influences affect the way we think as we develop. Transsexual This is someone who identifies themselves with the opposite sex to which they belong, biologically. Transgendered A transgendered person goes against the gender norms of their society

  10. Chapter 6: Sexual Arousal and Response The senses and sexual arousal All of the senses; sight, touch, hearing, smelling, and tasting, have a part in sexual arousal. Depending on the person, different senses play a different part in arousal. Aphrodisiacs An aphrodisiac is a substance that arouses a person. There isn’t much evidence suggesting that a certain food can have this effect on a person, but it may be the simple suggestion that it has the power to arouse that makes a person feel more aroused.

  11. Kaplan’s Three-Stage Model This is a model of sexual response in a person. It starts out with desire then goes to excitement and then orgasm. This model is distinctive of other models because of the first stage, desire; however this does not mean that this is a complete model for sexual response.

  12. Sexual Communication- This is an important aspect in a relationship. You want your partner to understand your needs and desires. Love is hard to explain, mostly because it means something different to most people. It is a sort of intense emotional attitude towards another. Having good communication can increase you satisfaction in a relationship.

  13. Sternberg’s triangular theory of love Passion, Intimacy, Commitment are the three components for what people experience when they say they are in love. These components are important in a loving relationship, but they vary along time and in different relationships.

  14. Chapter 8: sexual behaviors Celibacy This is when a person chooses to abstain from sexual behaviors. There are many reasons why a person may choose to be celibate. Many do so for religious reasons, others for moral reasons or for emotional reasons. Masturbation This is the stimulation of one’s own genitals. There are many different views on masturbation throughout the centuries. Masturbation can be a healthy practice because you get to know your body. Maltz Hierarchy This discusses what sort of sexual interactions are healthy or harmful in a relationship. These range from violent interaction to authentic sexual intimacy.

  15. Chapter 9: sexual orientations Continuum of sexual orientation Many people don’t fall directly into the orientation of homosexual or heterosexual, but somewhere in between the two. However, there are some who don’t fall on the spectrum at all and consider themselves to be asexual. They don’t experience sexual attraction. Homophobia This describes negative attitudes towards homosexual people; it is a fear of homosexuals. This can include a hatred of oneself for being homosexual. Gay Right Movement The goal of this movement is to decriminalize private sexual behavior, stop discrimination, and create positive rights for homosexuals. Homosexuals should have the same rights as heterosexuals.
