  1. Razon, Ana Sy, Katrina Olympus Mons: Giant Volcano of Mars

  2. Olympus Mons • Latin for Mount Olympus • Largest volcano in the solar system • Visible when trying to view Mars • Identified as a shield volcano • Built up from eruptions largely of fairly fluid basaltic lava • Youngest of the large volcanoes on Mars • Formed during Mar’s Amazonian Period • May still be an active volcano with the potential to erupt

  3. Olympus Mons • Located in Mars's western hemisphere • 624 km (374 mi) in diameter • 25 km (16 mi) high • Rimmed by a 6 km (4 mi) high scarp • 80 km (50 mi) wide caldera located at the summit

  4. Why Is the Olympus Mons so Big?

  5. Size • Volcanoes in Tharsis region are 10 to 100 times larger than those on Earth • Longer lava flows on the Martian surface • Higher eruption rates • Lower surface gravity • Stability of the Martian crust • Long accumulation time

  6. Olympus Mons Mt. Everest 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level Mauna Loa 10 km (6.3 mi) high and 120 km (75 mi) across

  7. Crust Earth Mars • It does not have tectonic plates. • The crust remains stationary and the lava piles up in one, very large volcano. • Hotspots remain stationary but crustal plates are moving above them • Hawaiian islands result from northwesterly movement of the Pacific plate over a stationary hotspot producing lava.
