  1. What is FNS Number Everything You Need To Know! The FNS number is a 9-digit number that is assigned to eligible food manufacturers and distributors. This number allows the USDA to track and monitor the distribution of federally funded food assistance programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

  2. The FNS also administers the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), which provides free or reduced-price meals to eligible children. The FNS number is also sometimes referred to as the DUNS number, which stands for Data Universal Numbering System. The DUNS number is a unique identifier that is assigned to businesses by Dun & Bradstreet, a credit reporting agency. The DUNS number is used by the federal government to track contractor performance.

  3. If you are a food manufacturer or distributor that is interested in participating in any of the USDA's food assistance programs, you will need to obtain an FNS number. You can apply for an FNS number online through the USDA's Food and Nutrition Service website.

  4. Once you have been assigned an FNS number, you will need to include it on all food labels and packaging that distribute to participating retailers. You will also need to provide the FNS number to the USDA you apply for any food assistance program benefits.

  5. The FNS number is an important tool that the USDA uses to ensure that federal food assistance programs are being used effectively and efficiently. If you are a food manufacturer or distributor, it is important that you obtain an FNS number so that you can participate in these programs.
