  1. Mission La Purisima Concepcion By Emma Thomas 5/3/13 Mrs Gil

  2. Founding History • The date when mission La Purisima was founded was December 8, 1787 • The mission was founded by Mary (Jesus’ Mother) • Mission La Purisima Concepcion is the 11th mission out of 21 missions • The nickname of the mission is, “The Immaculate Concepcion” • Another nickname is, “Linear Mission”

  3. Location • Mission La Purisima was located where the Chumash Tribe lived on the southern end of the central coast in land from the ocean, near a town called Lompoc 50 miles west of Santa Barbera in years of 1788-1834

  4. Design/Layout There was a church/chapel by the cemetery and bell tower Workshops were by the courtyard and the aquaduct, along with the fountain The kitchen was by the blacksmith, and next to the gristmill There was also a laundry room next to the workers quarters The soap vats were close by the tallow vats

  5. Mission Life Native American Daily Life Missionary Daily Life Missionaries made the Native Americans daily life Missionaries told Native Americans what to do Missionaries tried to teach Native Americans Christianity in church Missionaries taught Native Americans mission religions • 3 bells rang when time to get up at 6am • After waking up, went to church to play • At 7am, working starts • Chumash men and women went to work and children stayed behind for religious instructions • Men’s job was leather working, woodcraft, and farming • Women’s job was to prepare food • Women had to learn how to make Spanish foods • Also taught how to make candles, soap, and clothing • At noon each day, the Indians had lunch • Instead of acorns or plants, ate vegtables or stew for called “pozole” • After lunch, they enjoyed a period called “siesta” • After that, worked more until 5pm, when it was time for dinner and prayers • Women went to bed at 8pm • Men went to bed at 9pm

  6. Mission Life Today Used for state park (one of the state parks) Rebuilt to make you feel as if you were back in the 1800s Project workers planted plants that were in the 1800s Same aquaduct and water system If visited, you could see sheep, goats, turkeys, and Indians Possible to take a tour in the mission today 1793 volunteers formed group called Prelado de los Tesouros (keeper of the treasures) Volunteers play people who once lived in the mission

  7. Take A Stand • The mission system was unfair, because the missionaries treated the Native Americans rudely. Reason: Native Americans must understand all orders or they get punished by getting their feet locked up. Another reason: The padres wanted the Indians to be sivalized, and the Indians said they were sivalized, but the padres thought they were NOT sivalized at all. Last reason: The padres didn’t want the adult Indians to teach their children Native American traditions because if they did, the children would be seperated from their parents, or get whipped or chained up. That’s why I dislike the mission system.
