  1. Mathematics: A New Look at the Basics By: Brian Brewer

  2. Basic Mathematics – 4th Grade • Fractions have been the Achilles heel for most of us in our educational journey in mathematics. • Fractions are very simple but are usually taught in blocks or grids to make a whole. • This limits our ability to utilize the same features that fractions share with other modes of arithmetic.

  3. Basic Mathematics-cont. • This limits our ability to utilize the same features that fractions share with other modes of arithmetic. • Fractions should simply be looked at as ratios such as one of two pieces is one-half.

  4. Mathematical Relationships • The relationship between the “properties” of mathematic computation is so similar that we tend to over complicate it’s design. So lets review: • Adding = Multiplication 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16 4 x 4 = 16

  5. Mathematical Relationships-cont. • Subtraction= Division 9 – 3 – 3 – 3 = 0 9 3= 3 r 0 • All other mathematics is based on these facts and to “simplify” problems back to these basics is the goal of the critical thinker.

  6. Intermediate Algebra • Relating the fractions to subtraction is exactly what will simplify mathematics to people who are challenged with mathematical reasoning. • Using fractions as ratios instead of division immediately helps in solving algebraic expressions. • Using ratios helps in graphing algebraic expressions by relating slope to the difference of line helps students to identify with the task at hand. = 1

  7. College Algebra • Understanding ratios leads to simplify slope (rise over run) and other algebraic equations in upper mathematics….

  8. Trigonometry • Trigonometry is define as a branch of mathematics dealing with properties of triangles and their applications. • This mathematics branch is simplified through understanding rules of circular angles and how they apply to common shapes. • For example a square is a circle with for right angles and equal sides…..

  9. Calculus • Knowing fractions and basic mathematics also helps in Calculus when derivatives and limits are taught because they relate back to the essentials of ratios which are nothing more than… FRACTIONS!!!

  10. Remember!!!! • Basic Mathematics are skills that can be “tweaked” to better serve our youth!!!!

  11. Mathematical Relationships show the continuity of math from one form to the other

  12. Algebra shows the relating of basic reasoning skills to complex problems!!!!!

  13. Calculus and other mathematical skill sets are developed at a much earlier time!!!!
