Those that experience an Adventist education become part of a large community of alumni and lifelong friends. 3. Education is a three-way partnership between parents, church and school. 2. 2. Facts About Cognitive Genesis(The Christian Science Monitor - CSMonitor.com) • Between 2006 and 2010, test scores of 51,706 students, based on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills for Grades 3-8, the Iowa Test of Educational Development for Grades 9 and 11, and the Cognitive Abilities Test for all grades, as well as surveys completed by students, parents, teachers, and school administrators were analyzed. • In each subject category, students attending Adventist schools scored higher than the national average. • They also scored higher than their expected achievement based on assessment of individual ability – a factor few other schools measure.

  3. The goals of Cognitive Genesis are to provide answers to three vital questions: • What is the academic achievement of students in NAD K-12 Adventist schools? • How do students in NAD schools compare to the national norms? • What student, home, and school factors are associated with achievement? • Adventist education is unique because of its commitment to educating the whole person.

  4. Thus, in addition to spiritual growth, cognitive and physical development are also regarded as essential to a well-rounded education. • The goals of Adventist education are both broad and deep. • In terms of breadth, Ellen White states that true education “is the harmonious development of mental, spiritual, and physical powers,” and in terms of depth, she writes: “higher than the highest thought can reach is God’s ideal for His children. . . .Before the student is opened a path of continual progress. . . .He will advance as fast and as far as possible in every branch of true knowledge.”

  5. One of the most dramatic findings is that students who transferred to Adventist schools saw a marked improvement in academic achievement. • The more years a student attended an Adventist school, the more his or her performance improved. • Some of the biggest predictors for student achievement, include whether students have a positive spiritual outlook, have a healthy relationship with their parents, and take care of their own health. • These are all attitudes that can be cultivated, and they point to the importance of a holistic approach to education.

  6. Here are some thoughts in an article from Elder Ted N.C. Wilson, President of the Seventh-day Adventist World Church printed in the latest issue of Adventist World Magazinetitled: Being Transformed-Why Adventist Education Exists. • “The Seventh-day Adventist Church is deeply dedicated to quality education. With its 7,883 school, colleges, and universities, we have the largest Protestant educational system in the world.” • “Why should we make an investment in education? Simply put, it is because we want our children, youth, and adults to gain more than the world can offer.”

  7. “The core Adventist philosophy is that education should be redemptive, for the purpose of restoring human beings to the image of God. Basic Seventh-day Adventist understanding is that the foundation of all true education is a knowledge of God.” • “Seventh-day Adventist Christian education is absolutely indispensable. In spite of the challenges with which its leaders wrestle, Adventist education is a tremendous blessing.”

  11. What does it mean to be mission committed? “To make fully devoted followers of Christ who help others biblically withstand the final deception.” • What does it mean to be a seeker of biblical truth? “We desire to teach our students to be seekers of biblical truths and enter into a relationship with Jesus Christ.”

  12. What does academic achievement look like?
