Theneedforprofessionallibrariansandeducatingthemwasfirst put forward in 1924. Theeducationforlibrarianshipandtheneed of librarians in Turkey has firstcomeup in 1924. John Dewey, an Americaneducator, wasinvitedtoTurkeytoprepare a reportcalled “Report on Education in Turkey” in which he pointedoutthefollowingopinionsaboutlibraries: Toestablish mobile libraries, totrainlibrarians, to set uplibraries in schoolsandtoopenthemfortheuse of public, toassignteacherstotheselibrariesandtosend at leastone of themabroadto be trained as librarians.
Nationallibrariesare in charge of collectingallscientificandculturaldocumentsandtransferringthemfromgenerationtogeneration. TheTurkishNationalLibrary (TNL) is alsoestablishedtoassistnationalculturalstudies, tocentralizedocumentation, tosupportallkinds of scientificandartisticresearchandtosatisfyinformationrequeststo be receivedfromwithinthecountryandfromabroad.
Preparationsforthe TNL began on April 2, 1946 (on April the 2nd.), in a smallroom of theDirectorate of Publications at theMinistry of NationalEducationand 8.000 booksaccumulated in thisroom in a short time. Inordertohousethecollection, a newbuildingwasprovided. Aftertwoyears of preparation TNL wasopenedtothepublic on August 16, 1948. The TNL wasrelocatedtothenewand modern building in 1983 andinitiated service tousers on August 5, 1983.
