  1. Muscular System Notes

  2. To allow Movement, the bones & joints of the skeletal system must work with the Muscular system.

  3. The muscular system provides the Force needed to move the Bones of the skeletal system.

  4. The human body has about 600 muscles that are responsible for all of the body’s movements… inside & out.

  5. Involuntary Musclesare not under your control… you don’t have to think about them.

  6. What do the involuntary muscles control in your body?

  7. Blinking, breathing, Digestion& heartbeat

  8. Voluntary Muscles are muscles under your control…

  9. What do voluntary muscles allow you to do?

  10. smiling, writing, Biking & skateboarding

  11. 3types of muscle tissue…

  12. SkeletalMuscle=>striated (banded)

  13. Skeletal muscles move Bones.

  14. Work in pairs… Flexorscontract to bend a joint while the Extensors allow a joint to straighten.

  15. Attached to bone by strong connective tissue called Tendons.

  16. Skeletal muscles react quickly & tire quickly. Voluntary & Involuntary

  17. Smooth Muscle

  18. Smooth muscle controls movement of Internal -Organs …moves food through digestive system, lines the blood vessels, bladder and reproductive organs.

  19. Smooth muscles react slowly & tire slowly. Smoothmuscle=> involuntary

  20. Cardiac musclesstriated

  21. Cardiac muscle is found only in the Heart & controls the contractions of the heart muscles that cause our Heartbeat.

  22. Cardiac muscle does not tire easily. Cardiac muscle=> involuntary

  23. Muscular strength & flexibility may be maintained by Stretching(warming up) & regular exercise.

  24. Muscle cells do increase in size so that the thicker the muscle is, the stronger it is.

  25. Cramps occur when the entire muscle contracts & stays contracted.

  26. Pulled or strained muscles occur when the muscle is overworked or overstretched.
