  2. Week 1 Roots: • DICT, DIC, DIT = speak, declare • VEN, VENT = come • DUCT, DUC = lead.

DICT, DIC, DIT = speak, declare • Prediction (n) - Something that foretells the future; a prophecy; a declaration or telling in advance • Dedicate (v) - To set apart for some purpose and esp. for something sacred or serious: devote; to address or inscribe as a compliment • Contradictory (adj) - Inclined to declare or speak against; tending to state the opposite opinion • Dictatorship (n) - A country or form of government where absolute power is exercised by an imperious ruler

VEN, VENT = come • Conventional (adj) - Conforming or adhering to accepted custom, practice, belief or taste; without originality • Venturesome (adj) - Having or showing a disposition to undertake something involving uncertainty or risk • Prevention (n) - The act of stopping or keeping something from coming or happening

  5. DUCT, DUC = lead. • Aqueduct (n) - Artificial channel for conducting water over a distance from a remote site • Productive (adj) - Capable of creating by mental or physical effort; fertile; yielding favorable results • Deduce (v) - To trace the course or derivation of; to derive as a conclusion from something known or assumed

  6. Your Homework • Your homework (due Wednesday): Create 13 sentences using the remaining roots. • Use all 10 vocabulary words in a sentence. • Then find one other word that uses each of the roots and make a sentence for those 3 words. • Your sentences must hint at the meaning of the word.

  7. FOR EXAMPLE: • - cracy : Rule by; governed by • Not acceptable: The country was a democracy. • Acceptable: The country aims to strengthen democracy through greater citizen participation in local governance.

  8. Quiz Friday • You will have a vocabulary quiz on Friday. • You will have to know all 10 words, as well as the 3 roots! • Bring your note cards to class on Wednesday. I will give you a short amount of time in-class to make note cards in order to help prepare for your quiz

  9. Week 2 Roots • FIN = end • SED, SID, SESS = sit, be still • FER = bear, carry, yield, bring

FIN - end • Finality (n) - Conclusiveness or decisiveness; characterized by being settled or complete; something that is an ultimate act or belief • Infinite (adj) - Unlimited; boundless; endless; immeasurably great • Refinery (n) - An establishment for bringing something (as petroleum or sugar) to be free or be separate from impurities

Sed, Sid, Sess – sit; be still • Residential (adj)- Pertaining to the house or place where one lives; characterized by private homes • Obsession (n) - Domination of one's thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image or desire • Sedate (adj) - calm or quiet; serenely composed in character or manner • Supersede (v) - To replace in power, position, function, effectiveness or office; to supplant

  12. Fer – bear; carry; yield; bring • Fertilize (v) - To make productive; to cause the process of initiating biological reproduction • Inference (n)- A guess or, speculation • Circumference (n) - Outer boundary, esp. of a circular area; perimeter

  16. jur/jus • Conjure (v) - To summon, call or bring into existence as if by invocation, spell or magic • Injurious (adj) – Harmful, hurtful, damaging or detrimental to a person, property, reputation or thing • Justification (n) - Fact, circumstance or explanation that is proved right or reasonable • Readjustment (n) - An additional alteration or adaptation to a stated position

GRAD/GRESS • Aggression (n) - Any offensive action, or attack; an unprovoked invasion of territorial rights; hostility toward or attack upon another • Digress (v) - To turn aside or away from the main topic or argument in speaking or writing; deviate; swerve • Progressive (adj) - Advocating progress or reform esp. in political or social matters; advancing; going forward or onward

  21. MOB/MOT/MOV • Momentous (adj) - Important; consequential • Motivate (v) - To provide with an incentive or goal; to impel or incite • Mutiny (n) - Forcible rebellion against authority or a superior officer • Promotion (n) - Act or fact of being raised in position or rank

CAD/CID • Cadence (n) - A rhythmic sequence or flow of sounds in language; the beat, time or measure of rhythmical motion or activity • Cadaver (n) - A dead body, esp. a human one intended for dissection; corpse • Coincidence (n) - The occurrence of events that happen at the same time and by accident but seem to have some connection

Sequ/Secu - follow • Inconsequential (adj)- Having little or no importance; lacking in significance; trivial • Persecute (v)- To subject to harassing or cruel treatment; to oppress • Sequel (n)- An event that follows or comes afterward; a work (novel or movie) that continues a story already begun

Nasc/Nat – Be born • Cognate (n)- Descended from the same language; related by birth; of the same parentage or descent • Naïve (adj)- Showing a lack of experience, judgment or information; having unaffected simplicity of nature • Nationality (n) - People having a common origin, tradition, language and capability of forming a state; an ethnic group • Supernatural (adj)- Being above or beyond what is explainable by natural law; attributed to ghosts and goblins

Tra/Tract – pull or draw • Abstract (adj)- Thoughts not part of concrete realities, specific objectives, or actual instances • Portrayal (n) - Act of making a likeness by drawing, carving, etc.; representing dramatically, as on the stage • Protracted (v)- Drawing out or lengthening, esp. in time; prolonged

  28. Week 7 Roots • SPECT/SPEC = watch, see, look, appear • STA/SIST = stand, place • VERT/VERS = turn

SPECT/SPEC/SPIC = watch, see, look, appear • Conspicuous (adj) - Easily seen or noticed; attracting special attention • Speculate (v) - To consider or think curiously about; to suppose; to engage in thought or reflection • Suspicion (n) - Mental uneasiness and uncertainty: degree of probability that something will occur

  30. STA/SIST = stand, place • Stamina (n) - Strength or power to endure fatigue or stress; endurance • Establish (v) - To bring into being on a firm or permanent basis; to install in a position or place • Statistics (n) - Science dealing with the collection, analysis and interpretation of numerical data • Superstitious (adj) - Believing in an irrational notion resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown or belief in fate, omens or magic

VERT/VERS = turn • Anniversary (n) - Yearly recurrence of the date of past events; celebration of a date • Diversify (v) - To make unlike as in form or character; to give or produce variety • Versatility (n) - Capability of adapting or turning easily from one to another of various tasks; changeability
